Zero tolerance: no safe level of alcohol, study says
AFP ^ | August 24th, 2018 | Unattributed

Even an occasional glass of wine or beer increases the risk of health problems and dying, according to a major study on drinking in 195 nations that attributes 2.8 million premature deaths worldwide each year to booze.

"There is no safe level of alcohol," said Max Griswold, a researcher at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation in Seattle, Washington and lead author for a consortium of more than 500 experts.

Despite recent research showing that light-to-moderate drinking reduces heart disease, the new study found that alcohol use is more likely than not to do harm.

"The protective effect of alcohol was offset by the risks," Griswold told AFP in summarising the results, published in medical journal The Lancet on Friday.

"Overall, the health risks associated with alcohol rose in line with the amount consumed each day."

...

An average of two drinks per day, for example, translated into a 7.0 percent hike in disease and injury compared to those who opt for abstinence.

With five "units" of alcohol per day, the likelihood of serious consequences jumps by 37 percent.

Dig into the article and you find the hidden reality:

“The main causes of alcohol-related deaths in this age group were tuberculosis, road injuries and “self-harm”, mainly suicide.”

Remove these and I’ll bet moderate drinkers out-live the non-drinkers.

Agree. All we need are more laws, taking away one freedom at a time.

I wonder how many have already forgotten the lessons of prohibition. In the 1920’s, alcohol consumption per capita was higher than decades before or after.

With that said, there's nothing worse than a belligerent drunk. And alcohol makes some folks mean, probably meaner than any other drug (though i've witnessed hyper-aggressive behavior from cocaine users, too).

Fortunately, I'm a happy drunk on those extremely rare occurrences when I overdo it. :-)

I always have beer in the fridge, and have one or two most evenings. Moderation in all things is the key to happiness and health.

Personally, I'm saddened that you see neo-prohibitionists even here at Free Republic.

Three things that are absolute proof that not only does God exist, but he loves us.

  1. Beer
  2. Coffee
  3. Chocolate

Of course I knew it.

But sloppy writing like that annoys me.

As regards alcohol consumption, I am in marked disagreement with this piece’s *opinion* that any alcohol consumption is bad.

It spouts a lot of numbers about how much different societies consume. I saw no serious information regarding any real “studies”.

“Studies show...studies show” with nothing to show of the studies. The mark of a heavily biased opinion piece.

You'll see even more on the pot threads - but not all of them have enough intellectual consistency to also support banning alcohol.

Humans were brewing beer 3,000 years before they baked bread... there are Priorities that must be adhered to. Bread and Marriage appeared about the same time, Woman make me a sammich in those days was considered a proposal.

“a major study” of which no information is included in this agenda driven opinion piece.

What a pile of nanny state claptrap.

“But 100% of us won’t be dying in the next year. Certain behaviors and exposures will increase the odds of dying during that period.”

Of course, but life is a crapshoot——some people do everything wrong and live to a ripe old age, others do everything right and don’t make it.

Genes have a great deal to do with it.
