Thousands of Amazon workers receive food stamps, and Bernie Sanders wants Amazon to pay up
MSN "News" ^ | 24 August 2018 | Abha Bhattarai

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) will soon introduce legislation that would require large employers like Amazon, Walmart and McDonald’s to fully cover the cost of food stamps, public housing, Medicaid and other federal assistance received by their employees. The goal, he says, is to force corporations to pay a living wage and curb roughly $150 billion in taxpayer dollars that currently go to funding federal assistance programs for low-wage workers each year.

The bill, which Sanders plans to introduce in the Senate on Sept. 5, would impose a 100 percent tax on government benefits received by workers at companies with 500 or more employees. For example, if an Amazon employee receives $300 in food stamps, Amazon would be taxed $300.

“At a time of massive wealth and income inequality, the gap between the very rich and everyone else continues to grow wider," Sanders said.

---------------------------------------

Amazon spokeswoman Melanie Etches said the figures were “misleading because they include people who only worked for Amazon for a short period of time and/or who chose to work part-time,” she said in a statement. “We have hundreds of full-time roles available, however, some prefer part-time for the flexibility or other personal reasons.”

So implement Bernie’s plan and those mothers will never be hired in the first place, thus keeping us in the vicious circle.

Golly, ya ever think that maybe these folks are ones that squirted out and keep squirting out little dividends to increase their government bennies and it has not one damn thing to do with the employers who are not in the least responsible for how their employees live?

This is the same kind of people can't raise a family on minimum wage bullshit. WELL DUH!

Even better, there’s no delegated power given the federal to spend money to provide food stamps and so the taxes levied to fun those appropriations are illegitimate too.

Governance by Constitutional means solves the issue.

Or, baby mommas with lots of mouths to feed? With those guidelines, they could move up to Manager, easily...and STILL collect their welfare.

Elephant in the room:
People who can’t support themselves have relatives who are very unlikely to be able to support themselves. This is by nature and nurture. The genes are weak, and the culture is weak.

Application:
If you want to be on subsidy, you and your spawn must be permanently sterile. If you want to spawn, you must not be on subsidy.

A less effective application:
If you want to vote, you must support your immediate family — parents, children, siblings. If you don’t support your immediate family, you don’t vote.

There are countless ways this can work. We are not following them. Building and preserving a strong society is easy, but you have to acknowledge the elephant.

The article about the electric was correct. And it’s not just Amazon getting their electric bills subsidized by residential customers. NYS and NYSEG have done this with some customers. And it really pi$$es me off.

I do not want to pay for their groceries.

There should be no such thing as Food Stamps.

If we must feed people who cannot or will not feed themselves for whatever reason, then perhaps it would be best to establish food distribution centers. They can get the orange cheese, powdered milk, peanut butter, some lettuce, and chitlings.

Paying for them to buy specialty foods and anything they desire simply encourages the indolent lifestyle.

Welfare recipients will become unemployable. I’d like to tax Bernie Sanders on 100% of his income, given that he hasn’t not received a non-government paycheck for pretty much all his working life.

"Any full time workers on stamps?"

I think many Freepers would be surprised at the number of full time workers who receive food stamps, medicaid, or earned income tax credits. Single mothers with children make up a lot of the low wage job workforce and they more often than not qualify for benefits. Heck, even my firefighter/emt son in law's child qualifies for free school lunches.

Oh, so Amazon should pay an employee more just because they’ve had more fun babies than another employee?

The inevitable effect of course would be to spur more automation and fewer jobs.

Let’s suppose you employ 50 workers at $10 per hour each. You can replace them all with an expensive machine. You run the numbers and it is cheaper to continue to employ the 50 workers. The government then decides that you are not paying them enough and mandates minimum wages and other benefits that increase your cost per employee to $20 per hour. Suddenly it is more cost effective to buy the machine and get rid of the workers.
