The common weed killer Roundup (glyphosate) is back in the news after a US court ruled it contributed to a man’s terminal cancer (non-Hodgkin lymphoma). Following the court’s order for manufacturer Monsanto to compensate the former school ground’s keeper US$289 million, more than 9,000 people are reportedly also suing the company.
In light of this, Cancer Council Australia is calling for Australia to review glyphosate’s safety. And tonight’s Four Corner’s report centres around Monsanto’s possible cover-up of the evidence for a link between glyphosate and cancer.
Juries don’t decide science, and this latest court case produced no new scientific data. Those who believe glyphosate causes cancer often refer to the 2015 report by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) that classified the herbicide as “probably carcinogenic to humans”.
IARC’s conclusion was arrived at using a narrower base of evidence than other recent peer-reviewed papers and governmental reviews. Australia’s regulator, the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA), reviewed the safety of glyphosate after IARC’s determination. It’s 2016 report concluded that
based on current risk assessment the label instructions on all glyphosate products – when followed – provides adequate protection for users.
The Agricultural Health Study, which followed more than 50,000 people in the US for over ten years, was published in 2018. This real world study in the populations with the highest exposure to glyphosate showed that if there is any risk of cancer from glyphosate preparations, it is exceedingly small.
It also showed that the risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma is negligible. It is unclear to what extent this study was used in the recent court case.

There are other concerns regarding Monsanto, its products and its practices, than specifically the subject of cancer.
1) Enormously increasing the exposure of persons to lectins, through patented seeds and insecticides, which may have a destructive effect on the intestinal lining, leading to what is now called Leaky Gut Syndrome, and is related to numerous Auto-Immune conditions.
2) Advocating and lobbying for punitive legislation against private persons owning and sowing heirloom seeds on their own property, and using punitive actions against private farmers who unwillingly have their crops corrupted by patented Monsanto GMO seeds from open-bed trucks that pass by their fields on public roads.
3) Buying and then burying the research by Beealogics (c. 2012), which had been studying (Beehive) Colony Collapse Disorder. There is evidence that the dramatic increase in lectins caused by Monsanto products literally drives the Hymenopteran nervous systems haywire (as caffeine, a plant defense mechanism, can do).
As someone with a background in the physical sciences, including physics, chemistry and genetics, as well as in mathematics - and who was scored in the top 1%ile in such aptitudes - and as one who has studied logic, I pay plenty of attention to both reason and science. Your assumption that no one who in any way opposes Monsanto’s policies and products does not pay heed to either is both arrogant and ignorant.

Regardless, this is a Freedom issue. I prefer God’s design over Man’s. If you do not like that, that is your hang-up, not mine. I want the freedom to be informed about food products on the market, and the freedom to choose what to put in my body.
I do not want any corporation to be able to use its money to bribe legislators into giving them carte blanche on research, information, and/or production.

Actually, over 60% of their support comes from companies, including Monsanto.
Facts:
Roundup used improperly - not following the directions on the label does cause harm. This is not the fault of the product, but the user - like saying guns kill people and taking away guns;
Sprayed Roundup is at a concentration between 2-4 percent, depending on which of the dozen manufactures formulations are present;
Concentrated Roundup (not available to the public unless licensed by their state) is around 46 percent glyphosate. The rest is water and surfactant (makes the glyphosate stick to the plant leaves);
8 people (as of last count) tried to commit suicide by drinking the concentrate:
7 had bad stomach aches’
One died;
Surfactants, which are in most store bought glyphosate products, have never been studied;
There is NO conclusive data on the effect of glyphosate on humans. Most data points to no effects - as glyphosate targets plant genes not human;
All stories found on the internet are just that: stories. Anecdotal evidence proves nothing, but is good ‘evidence’ useful for use winning law suits, scaring small children, and snowflakes
You statement is not true. There is no such data about glyphosate causing cancer in any form, in any one, in any age group. What you read may be some internet story or rumor.
Monsanto no longer holds a patent on glyphosate; there are at least a dozen other companies around the world producing glyphosate.
The internet is filled with rumors and fake news - believing the environmentalist propaganda is like believing that Trump is evil and eats babies for lunch because you read a story on the internet or in some email.
The whole issue has been and is being extensively studied, but so far there is a lot of controversy however, absolutely NO data one way or another.
Glyphosate has a half life of 3-4 days in the soil. It attacks a certain plant gene - unless you have that plant gene, you are not effected by glyphosate, in fact, you take in more harmful substances as a matter of course from other products such as food dye, cosmetics, frozen foods made/packaged in China, etc.

This is an important point. I have a big jug of this stuff in my garage, and the MSDS is very clear that you should wear the following when applying:
1. Boots with socks
2. Long pants
3. Long-sleeved shirt
4. Vinyl or latex gloves
5. Respirator
6. Eye protection
If any of it comes in contact with skin, you should flush the skin with water for 10 minutes. When you're done applying, your clothes should be thoroughly soaked with water outside and then washed separately.
My wife loves when I apply this stuff around the pasture, because she gets to douse me with a hose while fully clothed. Stripping out of 30 lbs. of wet clothes isn't fun, but I'm not going to risk my life to control all manner of nature on my land. I'm also not going to try to control all manner of nature on my land without something to make the job easy.
Glyphosate makes quick work of pretty much everything it touches. Just leave it to rot and let the brush cutter clean it up later.
