Gab has gone offline.
The self-described "free speech social media platform" is taking time off the internet, after landing under the spotlight when it was discovered the suspect involved in Pittsburgh's synagogue shooting was a poster and user on the site.

Gab posted a message on its homepage, announcing that the site will be "inaccessible for a period of time" as it works "around the clock" to transition a new hosting provider.
The platform has been banned by PayPal, and fellow online payment service Stripe is looking to cut off the site. Gab's new hosting service, Joyent, reportedly will suspend the site from 9 a.m. ET on Monday, Oct. 29.

Gab's domain registrar, GoDaddy, has also asked for the platform to take its business elsewhere.
"We have informed Gab.com that they have 24 hours to move the domain to another provider, as they have violated our terms of service," GoDaddy told Mashable in a statement.
"In response to complaints received over the weekend, GoDaddy investigated and discovered numerous instances of content on the site that both promotes and encourages violence against people."

Publishing platform Medium has also recently suspended Gab's account, under which the social site had made a statement stating that it "unequivocally disavows and condemns all acts of terrorism and violence." This statement has now been made unavailable.
Mashable has reached out to Medium for comment.

That's all well and good until people show up and start saying the things that got them kicked off Twitter. Then it'll just be Gab all over again. The apps will get locked out of the stores, PayPall will shut off financing, the hosting services will kick them off, and on and on.
The tech giants are saying, "We can play this game all day long. It'll always end the same way. We win. You get shut out of the internet."
Well, now that Gab has gone offline I suppose that
means that the next one won’t be able to go ranting
about his intentions online, and is therefore much
less likely to be caught.

Absolute free speech is a tough one.
It includes letting people shout "FIRE" in a crowded theater.
If you're going to try to establish a free speech site you do need some basic rules.
Explicit and legitimate threats of violence should not be allowed. If you're going to allow porn it has to be explicitly stated photos must be of 18 year olds and over.
I never used GAB so I don't know what their policies are.
When you say, 'free speech' there are always going to be people who want to push, exploit, and test the limits whether they're legitimate advocates of free speech or agent provocateur who seek to post the most extreme ideas to force the website to be shut down. It's often difficult to know the difference between the two.
While I'm not going to use words like n*gg*r or k*ke or sp*c the site needs to make it clear how far they're willing to go.
Unrestricted, absolute, free speech will bring out the crazies, extremists, provocateurs, and pranksters.
I sometimes toy with the idea of creating a free speech site but I have never acted on it because I know there are people who will go over the edge to see if I really believe in free speech.
Free speech sites attract different kinds of people. Those who believe they have the natural born right as a free person to say anything about anything. Crazy, angry, and unstable people. Provocateurs who post the most obnoxious and extreme ideas to delegitimatize the site. Pranksters.
If there are to be rules and limits, the first should be banning any legitimate threats of violence. If you propose, advocate, or incite other to violence there should be a warning and a time out. It should be a 3 strikes you're out rule with an appeal process.
I detest the idea of censoring words like 'the n-word' if someone else says it and you're quoting them. You didn't say it. You're just reporting what someone else said.
If you're going to establish a 'free speech' site you need to think it through carefully and plan for ANY AND EVERY contingency because SOMEONE is going to test your limits and they can be either friends of free speech or foes.

Are you providing a free-speech platform and not moderating it? Until you do, you’re talking talk but not walking walk.
It’s easy to criticize.
I’m here to tell you, it’s very very very hard to draw a thin line and decide where it gets crossed. People will argue with you every freaking time, and they take it personal and they make it personal. Its actually easier to just say that free speech reigns and there are no exceptions and there is no moderation, because then you don’t have to do anything. But being the easy path doesn’t make it the right path. I hate to resort to a Reductio ad Hitlerum, but it was a lot easier for Europe to do nothing to Germany in the 1930s. If you look the other way you wont have to take a stand.
I’m quite sure that free republic would not survive if it wasn’t willing to cull out the hate speech.
"Active promotion" is a little vague. I think the current people in charge of freezoxee will do a reasonable job for the time being.
But if the destruction of Gab is ultimately successful, it's doubtful that the leftist authoritarian wannabees will stop there. When the financial squeeze becomes intense, we shall see.
