I have French friend. He likely is not speaking for all people of France, but said to me he thinks Macron will make himself dictator. I actually think that the French people are going to rebel - resulting in new elections - before Macron ever can get to that point.
Maybe some conspiracy theorists see Macron and the Pope as two heads of the entity referred to as the Antichrist.

France has been trying to commit suicide for years. Macron merely stated the prevailing suicidal philosophy.

The fact that they are synonyms does bring up the question that I’ve been asking whi is why use nationalism instead of patriotism? If the left is ceding both to us why not use the better one?
