Ocasio-Cortez Claims New Yorkers Are ‘Outraged’ Over Opening of New Amazon Headquarters

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the democratic socialist who unseated Rep. Joe Crowley in a shocking upset earlier this year, expressed “outrage” on behalf of her constituents over the opening of a new Amazon headquarters in Long Island City, Queens.

Amazon is a billion-dollar company. The idea that it will receive hundreds of millions of dollars in tax breaks at a time when our subway is crumbling and our communities need MORE investment, not less, is extremely concerning to residents here.

That depends how you define “taxes”. It’s not likely that they’re referring to income taxes alone but also property taxes and/or rent taxes, HOA fees, income, sales/use, payroll and personal property taxes.

My last employer had a couple of senior management positions in our Long Island office vacant for more than three years ... because it was impossible to find anyone to fill those positions who could afford to live there.

Most of the work in those departments ended up being done out of other offices outside the region.

Nobody in the metro area ever refers to queens being on long island. Nassau and Suffolk counties comprise LI.

So, her constituents would rather that all businesses leave the community, rather than invest in and build new businesses up that might create tax revenue and jobs to pay for those projects that she hold so dear. Guess she wants a running start at destroying the economy. She sure has her sights on creating Venezuela in America.

That professor has a great voice. He played a great, albeit short lived role on The West Wing where he was a snobby curator of official artifacts. Hysterical.

Growing up in WNY we always considered anything north of Westchester County as upstate NY.

I remember that being part of the discussion when they were evaluating plans to rebuild the World Trade Center. A lot of observers pointed out that there really wasn’t much of a need for a record-breaking skyscraper in lower Manhattan because there had been a decline in demand for office space. Why locate your corporate offices in NYC when you could do the same work in Houston, Atlanta, or Jacksonville with a fraction of the cost of living and a fraction of the state and local taxes?

Well, let’s be clear that New York State doesn’t benefit from federal income taxes or payroll taxes, or HOA fees.

Well DUH! Of course her supporters are upset. They don’t want jobs, they want free stuff! Isn’t that what socialism is all about?

Of course not, but NYS and NYC both have income taxes. And individuals still pay HOA fees in lieu of property taxes if they rent apartments. The point is, it’s all part of an individuals tax burden.

Maybe someone should tell her that Amazon could make it buildings available for the jobless New Yorkers for a period of time every day, and maybe while they’re there Amazon could teach them job skills, maybe even give them some money, and then maybe they could give part of their money to the city for the subway. Like a community outreach program.

States and local communities compete to attract businesses, just like countries do. Call it what you want, but that is the way the real world works.

HOA fees are not in lieu of property taxes. And renters don’t pay Home OWNERSHIP Association fees. Renters do, however, pay property taxes, indirectly.

Over half of Amazon’s revenue already comes from Virginia: AWS (out of Herndon and the Ashburn Data Centers) is well over 60% of Amazon’s cashflow....

All states and cities, stop bribing businesses with our money to locate in your area.

By giving one business a “tax break” you are forcing the folks and other businesses to pay more. They will pay increased taxes so the politicians can claim they are bringing jobs to the area.

I’m not stupid. This practice is stupid.
