The restaurant chain Chipotle announced Saturday that it had terminated one of its managers for suggesting in a viral video that five black customers were planning to order food without paying -- but on Sunday, the company acknowledged to Fox News that it was considering re-hiring the manager because her suspicions may have been well-founded.
In a series of video clips seen more than 3 million times on Twitter, a Chipotle customer in St. Paul, Minn., identifed as 21-year-old Masud Ali, and several friends are told by a manager: "You gotta pay, because youve never had money when you come in here. An employee adds, "We're not gonna make food unless you guys actually have money."
As Ali and his friends complain about "stereotypes," the videos show employees at the store claiming that the group had previously ordered food on two occasions without paying.
In one video clip, the manager smiles and tries to ignore the men while they produce what appears to be cash, as proof that they can pay for their food. One of the employees visible in the kitchen is black.
"It sounded really racist the way she said it was racist, Ali told Minnesota's Star Tribune newspaper on Friday. She asked for proof of income as if Im getting a loan. On Twitter, Ali asked Chipotle: "Can a group of young well-established African-American get a bite to eat after a long workout session?
Ali also posted the restaurant's phone number and address to social media. Within hours and under a deluge of criticism, Chipotle issued a statement implying that the manager had acted out of bias and announcing her termination.
But on Sunday, as tweets emerged showing that Ali had apparently made a habit of stealing from restaurants, Chipotle walked back its decision.

If anything they should have rewarded the manager for understanding the situation.
Now, they should be sued for wrongful termination.
Not every business decision is based on bias.
Sometimes good reasons exist for treating other customers differently.
Then they walked back the walk back. Manager still fired.
The manager will stay fired. But at least the dine and dash guy has been outed as the hoodrat/thief he is.
ATTENTION CALIFORNIA CRIMINALS AND THUGS
Chipotles doesn’t care if you no Money, they will feed you for FREE!. If their Employees get in the way they will be fired. Even if someone calls the Police, because of Prop 47 and Prop 57, you will NOT even get a Ticket, hell the Police will not even Respond in Los Angeles County unless you Steal more than $900. So Have at it.
FREE FOOD AT CHIPOTLES!!!
......then tweets emerged showing that the Somali African----Masud Ali----had made a habit of stealing from restaurants....
Chipotle walked back its decision to fire the employee (who was heroically defending the restaurant's integrity against this clan of thieving Somalis).
1. Enter the order
2. Verbally confirm the order with customer
3. Ask if fries are needed
4. Ask if drink/coffee/water is required
5. Indicate payment by cash or credit card
6. Process payment
7. Place the order with kitchen
8. Give customer printed receipt with order number.
So there should never ba any "dine and dash" events.
“they should have rewarded the manager for understanding the situation.”
They should have promoted the manager.
The kneejerk response to fire the manager, who was obviously looking out for his employer’s best interest, appears to be a very bad call here. I see this backfiring in a big way.
I don’t eat at Chipole but maybe I don’t understand the process. Every other fast food place requires you to pay when you place your order, before you get the food. Insisting on that would be the best course of action.
Makes me want to add Chipotle to the banned list.
Target this Chipotle for boycott by paying customers, send every deadbeat you know or can influence. Shove the Chipotle attitude back down their throats until they close or change their decision to fire the manager.
Ca-ching!
If it isn't taken (or paid for), the restaurant has to then toss that food away.
My son worked at a fast food chicken joint.
Almost nightly someone would eat everything but one bite or so and come back to the counter and complain that something was wrong with the order and demand their money back.
The manager would just smile and say no way.
To reduce wait time, modern restaurant management systems start the order in the kitchen *as the order is entered*. The desired end result is that the customer gets their order just as they get their payment in or as close to that as possible.
The last time I was at a Chipotle (years ago) you get in a line like in a cafeteria, sliding your tray along as you tell them what you want on your wrap or salad. At the end of the line is the cash register where you pay, adding your chips, drinks, etc.
So after your food is all prepared to your order, THEN you pay.
Subway is the same way.
Chain the customer to the table when you give them the Menu ,LOL
If I were the manager, or franchise owner, I would acquiesce to Chipotle’s guidance, except I would get a written contract with the corporate office that every time there is a dine-and-dash theft then corporate would be directly responsible for that loss.
