Jack Ma, founder of Chinese tech giant Alibaba, is among the world's richest people but he has now emerged as a member of another club: China's 89-million-strong Communist Party.
The billionaire's Communist bona fides were revealed by the People's Daily, the party's official mouthpiece, in an article praising contributors to China's development.
He is not the first nor likely the last Chinese super-rich capitalist to join the party, which counts property titan Xu Jiayin and Wanda Group founder Wang Jianlin among its billionaire members.
But Ma's membership had not been known until now as China's richest man had previously suggested that he preferred to stay out of politics.
In Monday's article, the People's Daily said Ma was a party member who has played an important role in pushing China's Belt and Road global trade infrastructure initiative -- a pet project of President Xi Jinping.
He has also been honoured as one of the "outstanding builders of socialism with Chinese characteristics in Zhejiang Province," where Alibaba is based, the daily said.
Joining the party can be helpful to private businessmen and women in the country as they navigate a complicated business environment where the state-led economy dominates many industries and private business can be unwelcome.
Xi has renewed a push to expand the Communist Party's influence in private business, requiring any company with more than three party members to set up a party cell, or lacking numbers, join with nearby firms.
Three in four private companies already host party organisations.

All the rulers of China are Communists.
Fixed it.
Ma was probably given the Godfather deal where either his signature or brains went on the contract.
And his American competitor/counterpart, Jeff Bezos is a member of the American communist party.
In Maos day, the notion of capitalists becoming Communists would have been dismissed as rank heresy.
Nowadays no one blinks an eye as wealthy successful people join the Party. And they arent reviled for being rich.
Who's your Pa?
Commie Party...
Ha! Ha! Ha!
Its a nonsense comment, really. Its like saying “Putin is KGB.”
In the Soviet Union, no one under the age of 40 ever entered politics without being in the KGB. Literally nothing in civil society existed outside of the Party and particularly in politics and government, nothing existed outside the KGB
In China, nothing exists outside the Communist Party. You are worth $40 Billion and you want to keep any of your wealth? Well - you had better join the Communist Party.
Eggzactly.
The perception among Chinese entrepreneurs is the Party values them and welcomes their energy, industry and talents.
And the Party likes to be surrounded by successful people. People who work hard and make it in China can join the ultimate status club.
The only good commie is ......
Unfortunately for us, the nitwits and morons here loathe capitalism.
They make him an offer he no refuse
Yep, it seems contradictory. How can communism have allowed such people to accumulate such great wealth?
And none of that wealth redistribution nonsense.
Unfortunately for us, the nitwits and morons here loathe capitalism.
><
And they love rich Leftist elite capitalists.
Life is full of dialetical contradictions and while communism is premised on a classless society, fhe socialist state of development accepts the existence of classes and inequality as a fact of life.
the Chinese who are buying (for cash) most of the houses tell us that they and most of their “investor” friends are all members of the Chinese Communist party.... indeed, party membership is nearly a requirement for any high-paid or power positions in Communist China...whether in government or in factories (which they say is the same thing, in reality)
and most of them vote far leftie-commie-D when they vote here
(regardless of whether they consider themselves communists by choice or communists of convenience)
they do mostly have conservative social values and they do not like paying our taxes at ALL, so IF the R party were to do some meaningful voter outreach I am betting the R candidates could get a lot of these Chinese votes....
but that’s only dreaming, the R party doesn’t do much stuff like voter outreach, voter education, or get-out-the-vote rides to the polls, or anything else needed for a real winning party. Except for PDJT, there’s been almost zero R party work to win.......... and this work is what the GOP-E hates PDJT for, imho
I didn’t think Ma would have a choice.

The Party wouldnt tolerate the emergence of competing power centers. Instead of shooting the rich, it buys them out and absorbs them into the fold.
