Trump administration officially bans bump stocks

The Trump administration is officially banning bump-fire stocks, senior Justice Department officials told CNN Tuesday.

Under a new federal rule, those who possess the devices, commonly known as bump stocks, will get 90 days to turn them in from the date that the final rule is published in the federal register, which is likely Friday, the officials said.

Bump stocks gained national attention last year after a gunman in Las Vegas rigged his weapons with the devices to fire on concertgoers, killing 58 people. President Donald Trump vowed to outlaw the devices soon after the tragedy, and some lawmakers on Capitol Hill urged him to back a permanent legislative fix.

But opposition from lawmakers and the National Rifle Association ultimately made a regulatory change the only realistic path forward to accomplishing the President's goal.

Well, if the government didn’t force manufactures to include all the safety equipment and emissions systems they would be significantly cheaper. What’s the difference? Do a search for auto weapons for sale. If there’s a ban, they’re not very good at it.

While I’m against banning them, I’m more concerned with the precedent this sets for banning firearms accessories by executive fiat rather than via the legislature.

And I’ll leave it at that regarding our quibble over the definition of “banning”. Happy Holidays to you and yours.

I agree completely. From a fellow FReeper who sometimes enjoys a good debate, I wish you a sincere Merry Christmas!

"But lots of people sell the parts to convert, don't they?"
"I've never seen any for sale, and wouldn't know what they looked like if I did." He stared at the young man. "Haven't even seen any shoelaces, super glue, or paper clips for sale here."
Got him Henry thought as he watched the young man's expression. In a recent case where ATF had charged a man with selling 'illegal conversion parts', an expert witness for the defense had used his shoelace to make a 40-year-old military rifle fire full auto. Then he had taken super glue and a paper clip and done the same thing with several .22 pistols and rifles. ATF had tried to suppress the videotape of these feats, but it had ended up in wide distribution. Henry Bowman made as if to scratch a spot over his right kidney, and started to pull out his shirttail so that he could reach the itch.
"Uh, well, uh, who here do you know that has some AK stuff of any kind for sale. Like, uh, another dealer like y-"
"Not one more word," Henry commanded as he brought the 5"-barreled Smith & Wesson .44 to bear on the young man's chest.

Liberty isn’t going to die over bump stocks.

Bump stocks are highly inaccurate. There is not a lot of demand.

I provided you with a fact. That is all. Your original statement “Automatic weapons are not banned” is false due to incompleteness.

I do spend time on YouTube and learn something every day.

They have started loading me up with commercials, guess I may have to spring for YouTube Red. It is too useful to me to put up with the annoyance, dang it. Those big time fails, when you have a really bad day or some such, are sometimes really funny.

I had no idea how they lay railroads now until I noticed concrete ties at local railroad, all laid by machine now. Amazing factory machines, Big farming all computerized tractors.

I am 80 years old so I been around since horse drawn plows. 😀

Dear Mr. President;
You just lost my vote in addition to many others. Frankly, I had higher hopes for you for I think you just blew your chances for a second term, unless that is not your desire.
Of course , in politics there exists tit-for-tat..... possibly you are appeasing others in exchange for other more severe matters you do not divulge.

City slickers such as yourself are a prime example why those who are devoid in their background of any real firearms experience and/or training should never pass judgement on matters you know nothing about.
Leave firearms owners alone - we are a huge voting bloc.

Just keep telling yourself that.
Over over and over remember also to say but Hillary but Hillary but Hillary as you lose more of your rights, freedom’s, and liberties.

Double unconstitutional as this is an undemocratic “regulation” and not just unconstitutional legislation.

I don’t understand why Trump did this, it did jack to appease the gun control fanatics who worked hard to elect democrats.

Who says we’d have died on the hill? I doubt a single vote was changed from D to R because Trump caved on this.

Admittedly this is a minor thing, almost no one has bump stocks and the ban on them is unenforceable anyway. But why cave? Let the libs cry about bump stocks.

No, I’m sorry, it’s not. If I can go buy an automatic weapon how in the hell can you say they’re banned? That just defies all logic.

Absolutely disgusting. When your executive order is indistinguishable from the one that Obama or Hillary would have issued, that’s a sign that you need to take a step back and listen to your advisers to whom you are not related by blood or marriage.

Hopefully, one of the conservative judges that President Trump appointed will strike down this ridiculous, unconstitutional executive order.

Pure bunk. 10 gauge is the way to go.
