The Marshall Plan officially the European Recovery Program, ERP was an American initiative to aid Western Europe. $100 billion in 2016 US dollars in economic assistance to help rebuild Western European economies after the end of World War II. We have spent nearly 20 times in Afghanistan after 17 years what we spent rebuilding Europe. And it’s not really any better now than it was 17 years ago. Time to start removing our troops. U.S. spending of more than $7 trillion(7,000,000,000,000) on conflicts and reconstruction efforts in the Middle East, Syria and Afghanistan in the last 20 years..

I suggest never. We have permanently broken the Middle East. We’re stuck there IMO.

We already know that ignoring the area and trying to bandaid it from afar got us 9/11. If left unchecked, they will regroup, re-energize and attack again. They cannot be left unmolested.

Blame Clinton, Bush 2, Obama, etc. There is plenty to go around. But it’s broken and I don’t think it will ever be fixed. It’s the modern day 38th parallel.

This isn’t Obama’s war. You can’t think of it that way, it’s simply not that simple.

ISIS was an outgrowth of AQ and AQ in Iraq. It has its genesis in Afghanistan. The last 4 Presidents all have blame at their feet for this crap that is this region.

And then what?

Go back and start all over again when they attack us? No effin wall is going to keep ISIS or AQ out of our country if they have the means and money to get in.

We need on the ground intel. Observation. Infiltration. We need the ability to interdict at a moments notice.

I know more about Afghanistan than most Americans because I was born and raised only a few hours drive from there.

Afghanistan is a desolate mountainous country infested with tribes who are living with 7th century religious dogma. They are NOT ready for democracy. Stop sending brave young Americans to die there at the hands of religious terrorists.

Wall is a must. Military expedition in Afghanistan is total waste. Ask the British & Russians.

“It’s probable that the departure of our troops from Syria, and then from Afghanistan, will result in chaos. But if there is no way to prevent that chaos except by maintaining a presence there interminably (read forever), let the chaos begin”

Agreed! We have enough chaos at home, just look at our Southern border. Regis tribute those troops and are the money there, where it actually benefits Americans.

Yep... It actually started during Reagan’s reign and advanced greatly during Carter’s reign. They are pushing on four generations now.

The Wall is never going to happen; though I’m ok with it if it does. But it simply has nothing to do with ISIS/AQ or Afghanistan/Syria no matter how much Trump wants us to think so.

Did the 9/11 terrorists come in illegally? Through our Southern Border? On foot?

No.
No.
No.

We can’t be isolationists and expect to stay safe. We also can’t expect our allies to BE allies if they can’t remain safe.

We all profess support for Israel on this forum, but they are getting SCREWED here. And I can’t believe Bibi is too thrilled with Trump over this.

This is the unfortunate truth. It is a war that will never be won... Ever. The Horse was dead many years ago and no matter how much we continue to beat it... it ain’t coming back.

“I agree, get US OUT of the Mideast, get US OUT NOW!!!”

No more money, and most importantly, no more precious blood of our young service people should be shed it that worthless region. So long as Islam prevails there, we should “drill baby drill” here and make ourselves completely independent of the ME as a source for ANY our energy needs. Once we have freed ourselves from that dependency, the place looses all of it’s need for our military support. Let the House of Saud take over fighting Iran.

Well, the Russkies figured that out, didn't they....

Maybe we should have learned from them. Of course, they didn't get a 9-11; we did....

“Bad move”

I think Trump wants to try removing the troops and if problems arise he can do something to quell them.

I think also that he wants to send another signal to the world that he’s not all talk and no action.

=============

Not one more drop. To quote LBJ (not that I'm a LBJ fan)

"We are not about to send American boys 9 or 10 thousand miles away from home to do what Asian boys ought to be doing for themselves."

What would be the metric for “finishing the job”? We went into syria (without syrian permission by the way) to destroy isis. The isis caliphate is destroyed; mission accomplished. Oh wait, now you’ve decided we have to fight iran and russia? well, go to congress (you know the folks who are supposed to declare war on countries we fight) and make your case to the american people.

Syria is a sovereign nation. Explain our moral right to invade another country that is not a clear and present danger to us without a declaration of war.
