Shutdown could drag on as Trump won’t move ‘fast’ on national emergency for wall
CQ-Roll Call via Sacramento Bee ^ | January 11th, 2019 | By JOHN T. BENNETT

WASHINGTON - President Donald Trump signaled Friday that a partial government shutdown now in its record-tying 21st day could drag on for a while as he said he will not move "fast" to declare a national emergency to access border wall funds.

The president told reporters during a border security event in the White House's Cabinet Room that he has the "right" and legal authority to make the move, which would allow him to access Defense Department dollars and shift them to the construction of a border barrier. But he made clear he plans to continue to press Democrats to give in to his demands before he issues such a decree.

"I'm not going to do it so fast," he said of an emergency declaration.

After House Minority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., earlier Friday on the floor criticized House Majority Leader Steny B. Hoyer of Maryland and House leaders for sending members home rather than keeping them in Washington as the shutdown dragged on, Trump called on both chambers to "come back and vote."

"We want Congress to do its job," Trump said. "What we're not looking to do – right now – is a national emergency."

Grand irony. The very definition thereof.

Democrats/liberals now see a Trump declaration of emergency as a way out of their mess.

It just doesn't get any better than this.

Do they realize they've been had?

Absolutely right - and I think all the tv/radio talking heads who are pushing for the President to hurry up and issue an EO are RINOs/Establishment sellouts.

RINOs want business as usual as much as the Democrats do.

I’ve been thinking that with a lot of prior planning, worthless and useless government agencies that need major cutbacks in personnel should be put on the “to be shutdown” list. So when the shutdown happens, more and more of the deadwood will quit.

Then, tell the agency heads to not refill the empty slots.

"We want Congress to do its job," Trump said. "What we're not looking to do – right now – is a national emergency."

It IS a national emergency that the Democrats could end in a heartbeat. The Democrats do not care how many Americans are murdered by illegal aliens. The Democrats could prevent that but they think that the illegal aliens are more important than American citizens.

Are the Democrats anti-American?

Democrats clearly do not want to make American Great Again do they?

Are Nancy and Chuck so consumed with hate that they will not stop the government shutdown?

Common sense is NOT in their side. The problem of lack of border control has been going on for more than thirty years. It is time to fix it.

Looks like POTUS is losing course. Too many weak advisors?
For instance, his legal advice: I love ACLJ, but Jay Sekulow is way too nice and verses in modern/precedent law, rather than USConstitutional law.

Fight, or perish, USA.

Meanwhile, their Gov’t workers will be clambering for a paycheck.

“Looks like POTUS is losing course.”

A crazy assertion. Without any effort to substantiate it.

“They can’t cave til AFTER the SOTU else Trump would look like Caesar coming into Rome after defeating Gaul.”

He would.

And he will.

There is no way the Dims can hold out another 2 weeks. Their foundation is already cracking and there are leaks everywhere.

They would be better off surrendering now. By far.

“Too many weak advisors?”

Way too many. Sekulow is a squish.

What’s to win here with the marxist controlled Congress? So they allow 5 billion for a wall when he could take as much money as he needs under a national emergency declaration and start building the wall now. More caravans are on the way.

This is idiocy.

This is how a real New Yorker plays the game. He’ll ask nice at first, like a ‘’gentleman’’. If that doesn’t work then he’ll ramp it up until you’re crying like a baby. “C’mon, youse think I f**king kiddin’ hea’ or what?’’ Youse don’t give me what I want hea’ I’ll break ya freakin’ arm!’’ This is how hard ball is played, New York City style. This is how it’s done in NYC. Washington DC has never dealt with this before. These Rats in Congress have never dealt with a hard ass, hard driving, take no sh!t New York City businessman and a guy like Trump. Those limp wristed, latte drinking Swamp Rats are totally out of their league with Trump.

There is no plan.

3 things that needed to be done right out of the gate in order for America to survive(I added one)

#build_the_fargin_wall
#drain_the_fargin_swamp
#true_the_fargin_vote

None of those things have been done.

His enemies are self eviscerating. Why go a different way at this point? Let them continue to justify their positions. Even the gov employees will turn on them... just watch.

Cause some emergencies can wait....

I of course support the President 100 percent but the fact that he is waiting on declaring a national emergency calls into question whether an emergency exists in the first place. If a situation of any kind is defined as an emergency then by definition, time is of the essence. By trying to first lobby congress to act and only upon failing to gain support of congress does he declare an emergency, IMO that totally discredits the notion that an emergency exists at all.

Second if the President has the power to declare an emergency it would also follow he has the authority to take action on that emergency. If this is the case as most of the Republicans are saying then the action could not be subject to review by the courts. If an emergency declaration from the President is subject to review by a court then the President can only recommend this issue be declared a national emergency and it's the court that has the ultimate say so. Also what if the "emergency" happens on a holiday? Do we still have to wait for court approval? Does anyone remember having an emergency of any kind and thinking hurry someone call a Federal court? Does anyone have the 9th Circuit 24 hour emergency phone number just in case some national emergency comes up and we need to call them at say 2 in the morning? If the courts can interject and stop the Presidents emergency action then the President DOES NOT have the power in the first place. The court is then going to make the decision if the border condition is an emergency or not. I myself did not realize the courts were in fact running the country and any Presidential action must first be authorized by the court. Does anyone remember who they voted for when it comes to the courts that decide everything in our Country? For the life of me I can't remember voting for any judge. Sorry for the rant but this whole thing is utterly absurd.

Brilliant point.

The only power the courts have is the power the executive and legislature cedes to them. IOWs, fark em.

Let us not forget North Korea, changes in the middle east and the pressure brought to China (all part of how the Chinese see us now regarding tariffs). All of that can be attributed to the financial support of our military.

I understand Trump bargaining away a wall at the time in order to raise his negotiating banner with the rest of the world. Lest we forget, he also showed his mettle with the migrant horde.

Now he is making the dems show their backsides on immigration. This all is huge. I believe a victory here will solidify a deal with Mueller. The swamp and the states gone commie will never change.

What's the rush? Even when approved it will take a year or two build it. The suffering of the Dems base will peak out long before that.
