Southern California police make arrest in cold case murder from 1973

Southern California authorities have arrested a suspect in connection to a nearly half-century-old murder case.

Newport Beach police and Orange County prosecutors said they'll reveal details of their probe of a 1973 slaying during a 10 a.m. press conference on Wednesday.

Authorities declined to immediately disclose details of the arrest, but Newport Beach police said last year they were taking a fresh look at the 1973 slaying of 11-year-old Linda O'Keefe.

The girl lived in the Corona del Mar neighborhood of Newport Beach and was last seen alive on July 6, 1973, as she walked home from summer school.

O'Keefe was strangled and her body found the next day.

"My office will never forget about cold cases," Orange County DA Todd Spitzer said in a statement on Tuesday.

Spitzer's statement thanked the FBI, the Colorado Springs Police Department, and the El Paso County Sheriff’s Department in Colorado for their assistance.

Newport Beach police in July released a sketch of a man, the possible suspect, based on DNA collected at the scene. A turquoise van was spotted near where O'Keefe was last seen, police have said.

Never too late for a hanging. After a proper trial, of course.

Kamela’s California DNA/ID kit scandal!

“Kamala protected a lot of rapists while serving as California’s AG!”

“Unprocessed DNA/ID rape kits in California while Kamala was the state AG!”

If she had done her job as our state AG, there would not be hundreds if not thousands of DNA/ID rape Kits not processed.

Maybe some females in California and the nation can bring this scandal forward after Kamala conveniently forgot about them.

For someone who’s taken an oath to uphold, support, and defend the Constitution throughout her professional career, 2020 Democratic presidential contender Sen. Like not funding to process/id maybe thousands of Rape Kits in California while serving as the state’s highest ranking law enforcement person, the state’s former AG, Kamala!

Article doesn’t say who they arrested. No pic of the suspect, either.

Who was it. Why did they suspect this guy?

a sketch of a man, the possible suspect, based on DNA

Hmmm, kinda scary. Didn’t know they could do that yet.
Probably other physical evidence, hair etc.

These new DNA methods are absolutely amazing to me. I love it! Very promising for catching murderers who have gotten away with their old crimes. Very dangerous for hundreds of millions of innocent people if the gov’t misuses it. I hate it!

Amazing, but were they unable in this case to depict the murderer as he would look now, instead of 50 years ago? I’ve seen that done in other cases. I guess it’s moot if they’ve already identified him. But if they hadn’t been able to get a bead on him so quickly, a drawing of him as he would look today would probably give them a better shot at finding him, no? But... amazing stuff!

Many of these cases are now being made because of people submitting their DNA to various companies like 23 and ME.
Your DNA becomes part of the public record when you do this. Then the police get a partial match on some old cold case. They compare the DNA that they may have from 1973 to the person who summited their DNA to 23 and ME. It is not usually the person who summited the DNA sample but some relative who is a brother/sister cousin to that person who MAY have been a “person of interest” back in then but they could never prove the link.

It is so alien to me, how does one do something like this? “Oh look, there’s some little kid. I do believe I’ll kidnap, rape, and murder her and dump her body in a ditch.”

Then, how does one live with himself? I look back at my life, and think hey, maybe I should have played with the dog a little bit more back in 1973, feel a little guilty about that. Don’t these people have a conscience? Geez. He’s been living amongst everybody for almost 50 years. Sick MFers, should be hunted down.

A case near me, they did a sketch of the guy based on nothing but DNA and they caught him.

That’s pretty interesting. So people trying to find out their ancestry are actually getting into the data banks and lending a helping hand to those investigators looking for criminals.

Wow.

A lot of prominent law enforcement officials are guilty of the same thing.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio in Maricopa didn’t test rape kits or put detectives on child sex abuse cases like he should have either.

Apparently they did the same in this case:

The sketch will be based on a Parabon DNA compiled image of a man who left his DNA behind at the scene. That technique of using DNA to determine a suspect’s “facial composite, gender, ancestry, freckles and skin, eye and hair color” has been used successfully in the past to identify suspects in the past. Manzella hopes that thousands of eyes will train on the image, and that they will at last be able to name Linda’s killer.

It goes beyond that. If one of your close relatives submits their DNA the police can detect a close match and follow that to find the guilty party.

I should have played with the dog a little bit more

Since Trump got 63,000,000 votes, I've started to think that we all watch too much crazy TV. I think there are a lot of us tender hearts thinking about past dogs.
