IIRC, the largest concentration of Gullah people in South Carolina is in, of all places, Hilton Head Island. We took a bus tour of the Gullah communities on the island and learned that the place normally thought to be the Gullah home in S.C., Daufuskie Island, has lost most of its indigenous population.
Hilton Head Island has a rich history going back centuries before it became a prime coastal resort.
The guide asked us to study a Gullah translation of Scripture called “De Nyew Testament”. It can be found online and is readable to speakers of standard English.
There was a movie where a gunman called his moll a geechee.
I think she was played by Shelley Duvall. That’s the only time I ever heard to word. Anyone remember?
Ah, got it. “Thieves Like Us,” with Shelley Duvall and Keith Carradine. 1974
I believe the coastal descendants of slaves are called Gullahs in South Carolina and Geechees in Georgia. These groups may be on the coast in North Carolina and Alabama too.
Wherever they are, they can all stop worrying about bogus climate change scares, and just worry about regular weather (like annual hurricanes) instead.
I stayed on one of those islands for a week in 1983. I was unaware that the stores were still segregated and went to the black store. “Otis, my man”. Yes, you did hear Gullah and yes, the islands were eroding then due to Global Climate Change.
One of my friends still lives on that island.
“Rich history” = Current pesthole
