India confirms loss of MiG-21 in Pakistan skirmish
FlightGlobal ^ | 27 February, 2019 | Dominic Perry

India's foreign ministry has confirmed that one of its air force's Mikoyan MiG-21 fighters has been shot down amid escalating tensions with its neighbour, Pakistan.

In a televised statement, a foreign ministry official said Pakistan had launched an incursion into Indian airspace "targeting military installations" in the disputed region of Kashmir on 27 February.

"But due to our high state of readiness and alertness, Pakistan's attempts were foiled successfully. The Pakistan air force was detected and the Indian air force responded immediately."

During the aerial engagement that followed, one aircraft from each side was shot down, the official says.

"The Pakistani aircraft was seen by ground forces falling from the sky on the Pakistan side [of the border]," he says.

Pakistan claims to have captured the Indian pilot – identified on social media as Wing Commander Abhi Nandan – and to have also shot down another aircraft.

New Delhi is "still ascertaining the facts" in the case, the foreign ministry official says.

Islamabad's action was a retaliation for air strikes conducted the previous day by India against alleged militant training camps on the Pakistani side of the border.

Bush would have taken him out if he knew, before leaving office.

I just have a feeling it came as a shock he was in such a public place right under the noses of Paki intelligence and for them not to know and tell us.

How they dealt with him is all I ever need to know about that place.

Yeah. I lived through the 50s and 60s atmosphere testing. I think it killed my sister who died of leukemia at age 8. Yeah, it travels and rains strontium 90 onto the fields and cows graze there and concentrates in the milk.

There is no way Bush didn’t know where he was. I suspect he was being used as a honey pot, watching his communications to track down his organization and dismantle it.

Definitely won’t end well for the technical support aspects of businesses all over North America. Bad day for cows too.

I enjoyed my stay in Pakistan. Of course, it consisted of sitting in a U.N. flagged plane refueling on the runway in Isalamabad.

In a war, pak will cease to exist while India will suffer heavy losses.

What’s surprising is where were the 4 SU30MKIs that were on scene? Why did they not take out the pak fighters? Perhaps it was ground missiles that got the Indian 21?

These two are my biggest fear of nuclear confrontation. Both armed.

The biggest danger is that Generals on BOTH sides will be tempted to go Pre-Emptive.

But I'm with you: Some militant muzzie Paki might just decide to go collect his virgins and take millions with him. I wonder about their Command and Control structure?

Almost state of the art in the 1950s. Maybe we can sell India some F-104s as replacements.

Some of India's Mig-21s have major tech upgrades.

Pakistan has played United States for a fool since 1947!
I can’t even imagine how many Billions have been given to Pakistan for 70 years, until finally PDJT had the courage and clear headed vision to stop it.

Pakistan...has more Madrassa’s than any other country. That is a factory for producing religious extremists.

Pakistan created the Taliban which took over Afghanistan and gave sanctuary to Osama Bin Laden. When Osama fled Afghanistan, where did he go in hiding for many years? Pakistan! His house was a 6-iron shot from Pakistan’s military school.

Pakistan’s best ally right now is...China!
