The U.K.’s Brexit deal with the EU has been rejected by U.K. lawmakers in another landmark defeat for British Prime Minister Theresa May.
May’s Brexit deal was defeated for the first time back in January but she had hoped last-ditch tweaks to the deal, specifically on the contentious Irish border issue, would help persuade Members of Parliament (MPs) to change their minds.
Her deal was rejected by 149 votes after 242 MPs voted for the deal and 392 MPs voted against the deal. Sterling pared earlier losses against the dollar after the decision to trade 0.2 percent lower at $1.3124.
The deal’s chances were dealt a blow earlier on Tuesday when the government’s chief legal advisor said that the risks to the U.K. from the “Irish backstop” remained unchanged despite recent legal assurances from Brussels — although he did say the risks had been reduced by the tweaks.
The Irish backstop is a mechanism to avoid restoration of the “hard” border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland that was erased with the 1998 Good Friday peace agreement between London and Dublin. Some U.K. politicians don’t like the fact that the backstop, although intended as a last-resort, would mean the U.K. remaining within a EU customs union for an indefinite amount of time and unable to leave unilaterally, effectively meaning it might be tied to the EU for an unspecified duration.

They do. What's more, her government lacks confidence in itself. However, the last thing any faction of a deeply divided Tory party wants at the moment is a general election or a party leadership election: so if Corbyn were to force a confidence voted it would (again) get voted down.
At least that's how it looks tonight - but in this truly weird situation, anything might happen. May could even choose to leave the sinking ship rather than go down with it, but that's unlikely: in all things she's the Middle England vicar's daughter - you jolly well have to grit your teeth and see through whatever dirty job you're given.
no Brexit coming. The will of the people is secondary to the government in the UK. Maybe tertiary. this is a a slow grimy dance to correct the peasantry’s mistaken vote. The EU is a progressive, inevitable process to better European society, enrich with new cultural values from other regions and religions of the world, and ultimately save us all from the despair of sovereignty, faith, and Liberty.

Operating informally based upon understandings can only go so far. If the government lacks the confidence of the Commons, and that fact is widely known, how can the actions of that government be seen as legitimate?
Those who originally voted for BREXIT, wanted completely out of the EU. The government was supposed to cooperate with the vote, but like Trump being elected, they were over-confident that the anti-Brexiters would win that vote. May has been trying to renege on the deal, ever since. I don’t know with whom conservatives would like to replace her, but almost any conservative would be better than her.
Power hungry. As my uncle used to say, “She really thinks she’s something on a stick!”

Pass!....The Westminster Parliament has been around so long you’d think there would be a precedent for everything, but I don’t think anybody’s found one for this. There are some parallels with Peel and the repeal of the Corn Laws in the 1840s, but they’re still pretty remote.

PM May must be removed or the pretend no votes mean nothing. PM May is obviously not interested in implementing an actual Brexit. Obviously.

Losing May will be a GOOD deal for Britain.
Any one with any honor would do so. These female leaders don’t seem to have that kind of honor, they cling to power.

I’ll bet there’s no hard Brexit. They vote on a “no deal” Brexit tomorrow, which will fail. Then they vote on an Article 50 extension on Thursday, which will probably pass. Currently, the extension will only be until the next EU elections in late May, but there’s no way they get a new deal by then and I don’t see May breaking the deadlock in Parliament by then.
If they reach the new, late May deadline without a deal, I’ll expect a second, much longer extension, which will give the “Remainers” time to get a second referendum, which I’d bet Brexit will narrowly lose.
She does not have to resign because she WON the “no-confidence” vote a month or so ago. We’ll see, but right now it appears that poor Britain is just going to muddle through this for a while longer. Brexit ought to have been accomplished months ago, in my opinion - and forget the mess that the EU is forcing upon the UK. The quicker they get out now, the more quickly the recovery will be done.
Because May and most of the Tories supported Remaining in the EU and are doing everything to make sure that happens. I won’t relax until it officially happens.
