I have a granddaughter doing her PHD at Brown.
Our daughter attended the Colorado School of Mines at Golden Colorado.
...in?
I have no idea of her beliefs and ideology, but I have no doubt your granddaughter is highly intelligent. The Ivy's and America's top 20 universities attract, and search out, highly intelligent people. That simply can not be debated.
This article focuses on the wrong issue. Yes, students should train for competence, and indeed, many people who go to lesser-known universities are very smart, hard-working, and they do great things in life, particularly in private enterprise
But the simple fact is - America's deep state, government in DC, media, entertainment and finance rule America. You can be successful outside of those circles, but you will not rule. And those deep-state governing circles are chock fully of people from these top universities. The Roman Empire had many wealthy people in the Provinces, but to be at the heart of the Empire, you had to be in Rome. America now is not so different.
The elites are still elite in STEM.
As for non-STEM, keep throwing your money into the street. (Yes, there are exceptions.)
As noted on another thread, every single member of the Supreme Court went to either Harvard or Yale. Whether they are liberal or conservatives justices, every single one came from only two elitist law schools.
I know I am rather cynical here, but one of the major things I have learned during my time on this planet is that you will NEVER go broke underestimating how shallow people can be.
If you can somehow bluff your way to a piece of paper from Yale or Harvard you are going to do infinitely better than a harder working fellow with more native intelligence who slogged his way through community college.
Not that he doesn’t deserve it more, but all of the decision makers higher up the food chain have consumed the Kool-Aid which says the fancy credential creates value in and of itself.
On some other threads discussing this, people noted that the connections and life long friendships made at these elite institutions, helps many succeed in life, in various career fields.
I have an AA degree and worked in television for 35 years. And my best bosses were always women.
Oh...and the Mrs and I are very happily and comfortably retired.
What college did you or your children attend??
I DO NOT CARE.
Nobody cares about your school. Zip.
Browse youtube for examples of true MORONS who went to your school. Look at the losers who attended your school.
That is not something to brag about.
The college slave debt that many parents put their children through is humiliating. Embrace the humiliation you foisted on your children, with unrealistic expectation.
Cheer the non college kids who paid their house off early, while college kids are replaced by foreigners in the workplace.
The college kids still have a decade of debt.
The non college kids own what they live in.
This is reality for many.
I have never heard of any parents who apologized to their kids for lousy beliefs.
I can never forget the video of a Dentist who said they will be indebted their whole life, how school was a really bad deal. Slave.
I recall the viciousness of some of my theretofore favorite pundits who savaged Harriet Myers primarily because she wasn’t a graduate of an elite law school.
.
all these fake degrees adding up to basic office jobs...yuck....
I went to nursing school and it was no picnic..academics thru local college plus labs plus work in the hospital....then you had school testing and NLN testing and finally you took state boards....if you didn't pass, you didn't get your license....
nowadays, young people going into nursing can expect to get their Bach of Sci in Nursing before getting a job....
Nurses at least, must undergo a rigorous education and pass state boards.....
most fluffy degrees nowadays demand nothing at all...
Very good school I’m told, congrats.
Engineers go to certain schools. Teachers go to certain schools. You match the school to your future.
Of course we want our offspring to receive a solid, unbiased, and useful education. That said and the educational result being the same, an engineering degree from Stanford will afford more opportunities than say the same degree from State Tech. Elites perpetuate their power by exercising power. We delude ourselves in believing America is a meritocracy.
She’s in her second year at Brown.....totally immersed in her research. And she’s on full scholarship.
School of Mines? That is one tough place. Tougher than any ivy by far. New Mexico Tech in Socorro, Texas Tech, some programs at OU and Texas A&M. University of Texas at Arlington, there are numerous programs that are much tougher academically than any ivy offering. And that most of those you see a lot of solid citizens come out of them.
The ivy stem programs are good, but they do not dominate. They’re Blown Away by School of Mines, New Mexico Tech, Caltech, MIT, and like it or not, the Air Force Academy.
