Freshman Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez got into a heated exchange with a GOP congressman from Wisconsin after he called the Green New Deal “elitist” during a committee hearing Monday.
Ocasio-Cortez invoked her experience as a waitress while mentioning the water in Flint, Michigan, and flooding in the Midwest after GOP Rep. Sean Duffy mocked her ambitious plan.
“People are dying. They are dying,” she exclaimed. “And the response across the other side of the aisle is to introduce an amendment five minutes before a hearing.”
During the Financial Services Committee hearing, Duffy introduced an amendment to a homelessness bill that would impose “green” standards on the measure.
Duffy introduced the amendment to vote against it — and spark debate about the legislation that Ocasio-Cortez has been championing.
“The Green New Deal is one that if you are a rich liberal from maybe New York or California, it sounds great because you can afford to retrofit your home or build a new home that has a zero emissions, that is energy-efficient, affordable and safe,” Duffy seethed during the hearing.
He added that the US Department of Housing and Urban Development did a study that found that to retrofit all their existing houses to meet the Green New Deal’s standards, it would cost up to $172 billion. see also Ocasio-Cortez slams Republicans as 'climate delayers' after Green New Deal defeat
“It’s outrageous. It’s absolutely outrageous,” Duffy said.

Everything that comes tumbling out of her mouth sounds like run-of-the-mill progbot boilerplate from DU to me, even the shrill thin skin routine in the face of any criticism. She thinks she’s scoring points on a discussion forum.

We think she’s ranting, but it was impassioned and sincere and anyone who hasn’t familiarized themselves with reality will think she hit a home run.

It really is! She may have won the audition to run for Congress but she is very thin-skinned. Alinsky said ridicule is man’s most potent weapon and she is a perfect target.
It just adds to the chaos. That said the peanut gallery is rapidly reaching the 25-30% level of the population. Enough to cause some real unnecessary damage.
Years ago Ct closed six coal fired generation plants. One of the main arguments was that pollution from the plants caused asthma. It wasn’t true then and it isn’t true now.
Ct electric rates sky rocketed as electricity had to be purchased from north east grid. Not to mention that natural gas supplies were choked as pipeline projects were canceled.
It would be good if a study was conducted in Ct comparing asthma rates before and after the plant closings.
