There’s No Understanding Donald Trump
Theatlantic.com ^ | 7/13/19 | James Fallows

Posted on 07/14/2019 4:09:30 AM PDT by cotton1706

It’s been barely two weeks since Donald Trump became the first American president to step onto North Korean soil, with all attendant theorizing about what the move meant, or didn’t. Was it the “biggest moment of the Trump presidency so far” and “already a political win,” as some media figures claimed? Was it, on the contrary, another sign of Trump’s “dictator envy” and “authoritarian buffoonery”? Was it a move toward peace—or war, or both, or neither, or simply more uncertainty? Who was outwitting whom?

Although it was just two weeks in the past, that moment feels like two centuries ago, given the nonstop series of crises and “Breaking News!” emergencies since then. For instance: the census showdown; the Epstein/Acosta disasters; the leaked British Ambassador cables; more rumblings about Iran and China; the horrors of migrant detention-camp conditions, and the long-threatened kickoff this weekend of ICE roundup raids.

Today I got a reminder note from a reader who had written in just after that “historic” encounter on the Korean DMZ. He argues that the uninterrupted torrent of (usually Trump-generated) emergencies since then reinforces the point he originally made.

His point involved a structural failure of analysis in the Trump years. That is: the people most accustomed to “analyzing” political actions and decisions—journalists, historians, political veterans, people who pride themselves on figuring out what is “really” going on—are the ones least able to recognize what the world is experiencing with Donald Trump.

What an enjoyable and laughable article. The Elites are so flummoxed! They're so used to "being in the know" and "ahead of the curve"!

They are frustrated to no end.

Wait till Trump is reelected in a landslide. They won't understand that either. They'll just chalk that up to an unintelligent, racist, bigoted electorate.

"No matter how loose the cannon gets, most serious journalists default to a polite interpretation that suggests, say, Trump had something in mind when he just did that ridiculous thing."

These politicians and think tank “ strategists, havent built and run a multibillion $ business and mastered the art of the deal, and thus will never understand Trump or control him. That’s why he threatens them.

“No understanding” Trump?

There’s 63 million of us who understand that The Donald is the greatest patriot since Reagan — and on a trajectory to be greater still.

It is darkly comical how our ever-so-sophisticated elites can’t understand a simple idea like putting American interests first. And by that I mean the well-being of average working Americans, not the bicoastal elites.

Yeah, it’s so much better to have someone like Obama in there. One who has an obvious plan that we all (all Democrats, that is) like, such as the destruction of the United States of America. Or like the current Democrats who want to increase illegal immigration to increase their voter base, ultimately resulting in: the destruction of the United States of America.

That’s when it hit me: he’s running a reality tv show out of the Whitehouse. Every day is a new episode, and every single move is designed to get better Nielsen ratings, improve the brand, or whatever it is that drives that peculiar form of celebrity. Mostly he’s feeding the monster that is 24/7 cable news.

The reader, quoted by author fellows, is absolutely correct but it should be put in the proper context: the president is doing what every successful president has ever done, get to the people unfiltered by the media. Without the support of the people he is ineffectual and a failure.

I wrote this reply on July 5:

The other day I was watching the video of Trump crossing into North Korea and it suddenly occurred to me, by God, the man is stealing the election 18 months before they count the votes!

So I wrote this reply comparing Trump's image today with Lyndon Johnson's image in 1964. Nota bene: the key word is "image" not media reports.

Consider what Trump is doing to the Democrats: he opens his campaign with a rally in Florida that draws tens of thousands; he appears in Japan in one video opportunity after another with heads of state and conducts interviews and pressers; he conducts high-stakes meetings with Deng Xiaoping, the images of which the establishment media cannot ignore; he generates terrific tension about whether he will be met in North Korea where he presents an image of a president literally stepping out to make peace; he returns home and delivers a speech in front of the Lincoln Memorial to cheering thousands with waving flags and flyovers.

We see one image after another of a president being president. A president in charge. Against that we see Democrat talking heads whingeing and demanding that the viewer believe them rather than the visual evidence of their own eyes.

The president simply stealing the narrative by stealing the image. If the mainstream media has its way, that is if the election is decided on their narrative, the president will have a tough time considering the shrinking electoral college possibilities. If the election is run the way Lyndon Johnson ran in 1964, the people will undoubtedly vote for a man they see as a real president.

What these fools don’t understand is that President Trump is the greatest politician in U.S. history ... he continuously trolls the dying lying leftist fake stream enemedia and their Dem Party affiliate, deliberately feeding their hatred, and thereby driving them to self-destructive reaction, in particular provoking them to take ever more extremist leftist positions so far out of the mainstream that they’re going to be utterly crushed in the 2020 elections.

In particular, the Dems have reacted to President’s Trump’s desire to defend our country from invasion by hordes of uneducated, non-English speaking peasants by completely forgetting about the well-being of U.S. citizens, and focusing almost exclusively on foreign citizens; in other words, the Dems have reacted to President Trump’s “America First” philosophy with a “America Last” philosophy, whether they realize that’s actually what they’ve embraced or not. President Trump has provoked the Dems into themselves exposing their demagoguery and hatred of America.

In the mean time, the Dem Party is now flying apart at the seams as they attack each other like a pack of rabid dogs, hurling identity politics epithets at each other that heretofore have been reserved exclusively for attacking their enemies. In other words, President Trump as provoked the Dems into being their own enemies.

I agree with your take on this. The liberals are constantly off balance because Trump is not a typical politician that plays their games.

DJT is building relationships with the power of personality.. He exposed himself to Kim Jong at the border in that he could have been embarrassingly stood up to look the begging fool. Build a bit of trust. Next will be showing KJU the wonders of capitalism with a visit to DJT's house.

DJT may be overestimating his powers, but he believes getting to know world leaders will pay off. I believe him.
