After 3 years of trying to overturn the election of 2018, the Rats realize that with a strong economy and their lackluster group of candidates, they have a very slim chance of winning in 2020. The impeachment strategy is an attempt to whip their base up and to scare as many Republicans as they can thus giving them a chance to win in 2020.

That is already in progress. And it continues until this moment in time. With no fear of repercussion.

They don’t have to have any specific criminal charges, with solid evidence, in order to vote to impeach in the first place? This makes no sense.

If he is impeached and convicted, he will be removed from office. If he is merely impeached, he remains in office

Conviction takes 2/3rds of the senate. The fact pattern of the alleged obstruction won't get that many votes in the Senate.

Trump would emerge stronger from being impeached. He needs to (and the institution will) put up a fight, but I doubt there is any real anxiety on the point.

The article was written by a Democrat congressman from Florida who wants Trump impeached. Like reading something from Nadler.

Isn’t Congress in recess (aka mega desperate 2020 campaign fund-raising mode) until after Labor Day? No doubt talk of impeachment is being used to head off blockbuster IG reports that could come out in August. The Dems are trying to make it seem these reports are in response to the impeachment talk rather than the driver of it.

“Are we 100% sure the Senate would not take it up for a vote and convict him?”

You mean for that largest hive of scum and villainy on the plant? I would say prolly not if it gets them morning talk show time and invitations to all the cool parties

Facts and logic dont seem to get in the way of the Dems and their agenda. So the House passing out articles of impeachment to the Senate is still a possibility. Especially when you consider that the Dems will do anything to prevent President Trump for being re-elected.

Consider the situation around April / May 2020. The election is coming and the Dems KNOW that if they dont damage the President .... somehow ...., he is going to win. That is when the desperation will set in, that is when all rules of normal behavior will be breached. Nothing will be beyond the Dem effort to damage the Presidents re-election bid. The gloves have already come off, but that is when the claws and teeth will come out.

I suppose they could always impeach him. On the grounds of “now, they don’t like him”. Why not? They used it against Trump.

You ask a good question there. Assume for sake of argument that a president is obviously abusing his power, but in a way that is not criminal. Things like what Lois Lerner was doing at IRS, denying 501(3)(c) letters, and every other form of bureaucratic favoritism (but not on racial or religious lines), ordering DOJ to drop all cases against friends, and persecute political enemies (abuse of discretion is not a crime, it's just bad form), and similar in foreign policy where presidents have the most power.

My point is essentially that a president need not act in a criminal way, to be acting in an impeachable way. Impeachment is a POLITICAL act. The only remedy Congress has is removing the president from office - this is clearly a political act, reversing the electoral college. VP takes his place.

Not in the least. McConnell is a tried and true dirt bag. I know most have short memories but I recall good old Mitch keeping the Senate “in session” even while not to prevent President Trump from making recess appointments. Now, if any of you think Turtle McConnel wouldn’t end President Trump’s presidency in a second, you need psychiatric care.
