Lowe’s Cos. told thousands of store workers this week their jobs were being eliminated as the company outsourced tasks such as assembling barbecue grills and janitorial services.

The home-improvement chain notified maintenance staff and assemblers that put together grills, wheelbarrows and other products that they were being laid off, according to the company and employees. Those roles will be taken over by third-party companies

Yes, drug testing isn’t optional in many jobs anymore in this legal atmosphere. In fact, while I support/understand drug testing, companies are going even further in their intrusiveness - in some cases running credit reports on potential employees (forecasting theft?). As for looking at social media sites, that is on the potential employee; they put it out in the public domain (if they don’t restrict access), so they shouldn’t be surprised when others see it (and react).

Lowe’s stores are cleaner and brighter than Home Depot.

However, Home Depot has helpful staff, and Lowe’s has nothing.

"If we don’t want companies to outsource labor then we need to reduce the ridiculous number of laws, regulations and taxes imposed on hiring Americans."

Right on! Plus...

“Your lower working bees are the cheapest employees.”

Due to regulation and minimum wage laws there is no such thing as a cheap employee. Laws and regulations get more onerous as a company gets bigger and has more employees, requiring even more costs on each employee. Lowe’s stock is soring and making value for Lowe’s owners, the stockholders, is the main goal of management. Lowe’s has done a wonderful job of that. Outsourcing employees who are more liability than asset is part of creating more value for the owners...that’s people who hold Lowe’s stock in their retirement funds. Everything is a tradeoff and Lowe’s management is making a tradeoff in support of their fiduciary duty to the stockholders.

“You kill your back bone then you entire operation will suffer.”

I suspect the implication here is that the janitor will advance to be a sales associate or cashier. That may happen but for the most part the people Lowe’s hires have already completed a career or are in their middle ages. While their are younger employees who can be expected to move up the pay and responsibility ladder, the ones being laid off probably, on average, are not.

I spoke with the Lowe’s associate who is my contact for big orders. He told me that Lowe’s management is transforming their business model towards more automation. And, yes, it has been painful for the employees. But, as he said, “We’ll get used to it.” Incidentally, he buys stock in Lowe’s with every paycheck. He is thrilled with the way the stock is going up.

Hasn’t HOME DEPOT been using outside third party sources like grass cutting, general house cleaning & BBQ/wheel barrel build for years? None wear Aprons & it’s a better business tax deduction? And with a new ex HD running Lowe’s (Marvin Ellison) Lowe’s is just catching up to Home Depot business smarts?

““”Outsourcing” means that they will fire US citizens and hire illegal contractors who will work for half the price. “

“That’s exactly right.”

NOT in my town. Zero illegals here.

I don’t see how they’re going to save any money. It appears to me that assembling wheelbarrows and barbecue grills is a collateral duty. They have a few floor models (wheelbarrows are usually outside). If you want them to assemble it, they charge you extra, but it’s an employee who otherwise works the floor who assembles it for you.

Is any Lowe’s selling so many wheelbarrows and barbecue grills that assembling them is a full time job?

They won’t live in your town; they’ll be driven in each day by contractors to do the work, then leave. That is how the landscaping/day worker market operates...

This does not surprise me.

I went to pick up an online order - took almost an hour. Lot of workers standing around, looking annoyed when you asked them for help (of the two assigned to help pick my order, one did absolutely nothing for whole time). Nobody knew how to process the paperwork (had to call the manager to run the register).

“Incidentally, he buys stock in Lowe’s with every paycheck.”

He’s a fool; that’s called “putting all of your eggs in one basket. His paycheck and investments are tied up in the same company. On top of that, eliminating his paycheck will be the prime reason the stock would go up.

How will they do that? How do they handle the payroll taxes?

Locally, Home Depot inventory control deteriorated. Stuff that I wanted was out of stock.

I started going to Lowes and learned the local emlpoyees were not very helpful.

Presently, before going, I look up the product on line to be certain it is in current stock and then find the location, the aisle and bin.

Since I don’t use cash, with only one or two small items, self check out is both convenient and quick at Lowes.

Not necessarily. But the work will be done by people whosea retirement and other benefits do not show up as liabilities on Lowes balance sheet.

In public companies it’s abut maintaining an illusion for analysts and shareholders.

Too bad Menards is only in the Midwest, they would clean up! They are #3 in sales behind Home Depot and Lowes and those stores are nationwide.

Businesses are for making profit. With the minimum wage increase and cost of benefits, it is sorry to say cheaper for Lowes to use contractors.

++++++++++++++++++++++==

No what it means is they have to drug test to meet insurance requirements as the leadership elites in this country have put everyone in limbo with federal laws and state laws not in sych. Many companies are in this bind.

Also federal laws and some state laws do not permit the hiring of illegals so they do not, however the policies of the elites flood the country with illegal aliens thus blocking jobs for citizens who need a bit of a push.

So they hire companies who are owned by LEGAL citizens to meet guidelines and they cannot be held responsbile for who these countries hire.

This is our elite establishment at work on their agenda to harm our country, take jobs away from our citizens, and harm good businesses.
