Springfield Walmart Open Carry of Rifle Becomes Panic Driven by Media Contagion
Ammoland ^ | 11 August, 2019 | Dean Weingarten

At about 4:10 p.m. on 8 August 2019, Dmitriy Andreychenco walked into the Walmart Neighborhood Market in Springfield, Missouri. He had a slung AR-type rifle and was wearing a T-shirt and tactical vest. He obtained a shopping cart and was videoing himself on a cell phone while pushing the cart through the store. He did not threaten anyone, point the rifle at anyone, or make any threats that are known at this time.

A manager at the store pulled the store alarm, causing a panic while customers evacuated the store. Dmitriy evacuated with the other customers. As he left the store, a firefighter with a concealed carry permit, who was armed, drew his pistol and held Dmitriy for police. In the video from outside the store, you can see that Dmitri was calmly complying with police orders. Look at his black t-shirt. I do not see any evidence of body armor being worn.

He is wearing some sort of web gear, which it appears, the media denoted as “body armor.” Identification of web gear as body armor has been common in the media.

Open carry is legal in Missouri. It has been hard fought for. Opponents of an armed population have worked hard to characterize open carry as threatening. The last few days of a media blitz on the rampage murders in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, have put the country on edge. The message has been that every young white male is a deadly threat. The manager at Walmart seems to have bought into the message.

It is now known that Dmitriy posed no threat and was open carrying the rifle. It was not pointed at anyone, nor was any threat verbalized.

It was the manager that caused a panic by ordering an alarm pulled.

Normally this guy may not have been a threat,I guess. But right after a shooting in a charged atmosphere, not a very bright idea.

That is the entire crux of the discussion about this event.

The left want anyone openly carrying a gun to be a terrorist threat. (except for agents of the state).

From a column I read on this a few days ago:

“Anyone who is exercising their Second Amendment rights on the basis of MUAH RAHTS!!!!!!” and in such a way that the actual and reasonably foreseeable effect is to undermine generalized political support for the Second Amendment is no genuine friend of the Second Amendment. They are, rather, engaged in self-serving, attention-grabbing behavior that is detrimental to the Second Amendment. They are no ally of the Second Amendment, and no friend of mine.”

Using and abusing the second amendment in this way is foolish and counterproductive. This fool was an attention whore. What next? Yelling “fire” in a crowded theater?

One actually has a constitutional right to stomp on the US flag. Does that strengthen our rights?

Well stated. Given the current environment, what is the difference between what this guy did and yelling fire in a crowded theater?

Now that I think of it the left is yelling fire in a theater all the time. Lately they’ve been yelling racism in a crowded diverse country.

One can carry the word fire with them at all times and use it when it is appropriate.

And not violate any law.

Do note that Mr. Artemis did not state anything. He just posted what he read online recently.

Your thinking is exactly wrong. And exactly what the left wants to foment....which is, "please don't do anything to offend"

How many times have I read on this forum: "why did nobody fight back with these shooters ?"; or "We should be like Israel where everybody open carries"; or "if the shooters had seen people like Dimitry first, they never would have opened fire."

And spare the hell out of me the yelling fire in a theater comparison. Go campaign with Joe Biden if that is your thought process.

You have a 2nd amendment right, if you choose to keep it.

re: “You have a 2nd amendment right, if you choose to keep it.”

And if you get SHOT by a CCW holder who is holding you at gunpoint waiting for the poh-leece to arrive (after you just paraded through A WAL-MART while taking selfies), who do you blame?

I have had trouble with the “yelling fire” argument for years. If open carry is legal in the state, the worst that should happen is he should have been civilly kicked out of the store, or contacted by the police to assure he is not a nutcase. If a manager panicked, and pulled the alarm, he was the one yelling fire. Did the firefighter who pulled a weapon on the guy commit an assault or was he reacting to the alarm the manager pulled? Will anyone defend this moron like the ACLU is supposed to? The fear over weapons just because they exist is a media driven fear, not a rational one...though it should cause an awareness level increase and a behavior change especially if not armed.

“...which is, “please don’t do anything to offend” “

There are rights and times and places to use those rights. If it’s legal to have sex with an eighteen year old in your area, it’s still probably a bad idea to have it where her father can overhear. It’s legal to carry a metal golf club, but it’s probably a bad idea while standing in a lightning storm. There is a time and a place for everything.

Had I seen this young man walking in to my local Walmart, I might have shot him dead. I carry all the time. So, do, probably, a large percentage of the locals in my rural area.

The point is, there are copycat killers and if he shows all the signs of being one, which this guy did, he runs the risk of getting killed. He showed very poor judgement.

But you can tell by his actions, though, that he would shoot his gun if given the chance. ;-)

Open carry is legal in this state. So are there any other legal actions you think should result in expulsion or police harassment?
