2020 Census 'listers’ have to verify millions of addresses. Look for them in your neighborhood.

Starting next week and continuing into October, you might see people carrying laptops walking through your neighborhood and knocking on doors. They’re what the Census Bureau calls “listers” — census workers charged with making sure the bureau has a complete list of all addresses as it prepares for its massive population count next year.

It’s the first major field operation of the 2020 Census.

Starting next Monday, Aug. 19, listers will begin verifying the remaining 35% of addresses that need double-checking, using maps and a list of known addresses on a laptop. Mostly, they will be checking to see whether a basement was turned into an apartment, new housing was built, someone is living in a trailer on a property, or some other new or unconventional living arrangement exists

I lived in Dallas at the time—the 1970s, and they sent me all over the southwest.

The people were fine everywhere, but in rural areas of Louisiana and Arkansas the roads were terrible—muddy in some places—very rickety bridges in others.

Some of the black rural people told me I was the first white person they had ever seen! (The little kids surrounded me and stared like I was a visiting alien.)

I had a lister come to my door a few days ago. She was a pleasant middle age woman.

She handed me a census confidentiality notice.

One very nice man on my street owns two houses. He rents out space to his family members, and some people claim, he rents to unrelated renters as well. I wonder what she was told down the street.

It is not nearly so lucrative for a hustler now as it was in 1990. It has all been redesigned to compensate for the retirees and students who spend 60 seconds carefully drawing in a name and who cannot organize their work to use time efficiently. There are no bonuses any more. I did it again in 2000 but quit after a short time.

Will they also verify the addresses of one two three poop sidewalk in San Francisco or will they just label those 10th number one cardboard box number two and wide-open sidewalk with a poop pile number 3?

The worker came to our house. It was a very short and simple interview. She only asked if our address was correct and if we had any other mailing address.

I never did see the “lister” for 2000, but got a chance to talk to the “checker”. He was up at the end of the cul de sac looking for a house # on the garage there. The old farm house there faces the next street. The guy that bought that house used to park just to the west and enter that street, had no garage. Not too long he got a surprise and someone built a house where he used to park his car. He had no entry to a street anymore. He ended up building a garage behind (the cul de sac side) and putting in a long driveway to the cul de sac.
The “lister” had identified that as a residence and must have given it an “address”. The “checker” could not find that address. My conclusion was that the “checker” got a bonus for finding new addresses.

Pay is $15.5 a hour and .57 a mile driving. That is down here in Texas.

After my ‘Posted’ signs is one that state’s ‘Protected by Thor Night Vision - Because Bullets Don’t Care How Dark It Is’.
Haven’t had any issues since it’s been up.

Now I’ll have to break out the 12 gauge trip wire alarms.

I worked for the census once. We asked lots of questions, and personal questions on the long form.
I’d been working for a while, when my manager said we only needed about 1/10th of the question answered on the long form.

Districts are sized based on population. Not adult population. And not just citizens

"and then the "lister" asked if anyone was living here illegally"

They actually asked that?

Very surprised, and encouraged.

Not saying that's the end all be all, but it's a great sign that perhaps...we might start to get a handle on just how many foreign nationals who are illegally in our country.

Yale, MIT study: 22 million, not 11 million, undocumented immigrants in US [1]

And 22,000,000 undoubtedly, is under estimated.

When the census asks about my race, I’m going to check the “other” box and write in “American citizen.”

Anyone else with me?

During the 2010 census had a woman come up my driveway saying she was from the Census and wanted to ask some questions. I asked her for a photo ID but she had none. Apparently, the Census Bureau decided to save money and not issue their Census Takers with a photo ID. Since I had no way to verify who she was I told her to leave. Same thing will happen this year.
