The US tried to buy Greenland before buying Alaska.
I believe you are confusing Alaskan statehood with the actual purchase of Alaska from the Russians in 1867.

No, he has it right. Occurred under the Andrew Johnson administration. Steward, Sec of State, was the outfront man. In addition to purchasing Alaska he expressed interest in purchasing Greenland and Iceland.
If the Danish Government had half a functioning brain....they would lease Greenland, 100 years, to the USA for an annual lease...
OK, I really like that because they wouldnt be US citizens that way. Can I add another suggestion?
All of the illegal aliens here should be given the choice of being sent back home OR....go to Greenland to work.
How about that?!?
We still have a USAF base at Thule, Greenland. It is above the arctic circle. https://www.airforce-technology.com/features/thule-military-base-in-greenland/
you say that there are “56,000 odd people” in Greenland. I’m sure that not all of them are “odd,” but rather normal.
I believe that Thule, above the arctic circle has a civilian population of around 500 and about 150 Air Force personnel. The main population lives in the southern quarter of the island.

I meant Nuuk, the capital. My Eskimo is rusty. ;-)
Thule is colder than a witches boob in a brass bra. Nuuk is is just cold, but grass does grow.
