Trump floated nuking hurricanes to stop them from hitting US: report (barf alert)

President Trump has floated dropping nuclear bombs into hurricanes to stop them from hitting the United States in meetings with Homeland Security and national security officials, Axios reported Sunday.

According to sources who have heard the president's private remarks and been briefed on a National Security Council memorandum, the suggestions were made during briefings on hurricanes.

"I got it. I got it. Why don't we nuke them?" Trump said at one such White House briefing, a source who was there told Axios.

"They start forming off the coast of Africa, as they're moving across the Atlantic, we drop a bomb inside the eye of the hurricane and it disrupts it. Why can't we do that?" the source added, paraphrasing the president's remarks.

The source told Axios that the briefer responded with something to the effect of "Sir, we'll look into that."

A 2017 NSC memo relayed to Axios reportedly describes a second conversation in which Trump asked whether the administration should bomb hurricanes to stop them from hitting the homeland.

A source briefed on the NSC memo noted that it does not contain the word "nuclear."

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Axios' report. A senior administration told Axios, "We don't comment on private discussions that the president may or may not have had with his national security team."

Another senior administration official told Axios, "His goal — to keep a catastrophic hurricane from hitting the mainland — is not bad. His objective is not bad."

The idea of using nuclear weapons to disrupt hurricanes has been floated before.

A National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration fact sheet about tropic cyclones address the concept and points out that it would be unlikely to work and most likely cause more harm than good.

Would like to see it done as an experiment. The major concern would be the radioactive fallout pollution factor.

good idea...it would do double the good if we could disrupt the hurricanes by simply dropping some communistic/nazi style Windbags.... into the center, eye of the hurricanes

1) If he said “nuke” I doubt he really meant “nuke”.
2) If this conversation took place, like others said, it sounds more like just sounding off ideas to prevent hurricanes from harming people and cities
3) We have some technologies such as seeding clouds for rain. Dunno how well any of that works
4) I am no expert but I doubt even a “really big bomb” would work. Hurricanes stretch something like 300 miles wide. A nuke might work but sounds absurd. Perhaps a large number of large bombs could break the storms up in the atmosphere? I dunno.
5) How about other technologies such as frequency waves to disrupt the formation of hurricanes?
6) All ideas are worth thinking through. Most of them will have unintended consequences I would imagine. I don’t think anyone would want to test nuclear explosions.

More hot air is probably the wrong idea to stop hurricanes.

I think I read the same short story. It was in Analog science fiction magazine, and it involved using regular bombs to disrupt tornadoes.

Hurricanes are much bigger. A nuke big enough to disrupt one would have unwelcome side effects.

If true, maybe he got the idea from that idiot Democrat Congressman (last name Schitt, or something like that?), who threatened to use nukes on American gun owners...

This reminds me of when Ronald Reagan said that trees cause pollution. The media regaled in finger-wagging smugness as proof that Reagan was an “amiable dunce”. Yet, a report came out a few years later claiming that trees do pollute with the dropping of leafs, the stripping of bark that ends up in run-off water, etc.

Dropping a bomb (not a nuke) might disrupt a hurricane enough to prevent its intensification and, if done over sea and out of the shipping lanes, be harmless to most human and marine life. It’s worth investigating. It wouldn’t be done recklessly but if it could, say, reduce a Category 5 to a Category 2, with the reduction in loss of life and property, would it not be worth it?

I’ve always had a feeling that tropical storms and hurricanes serve some good purpose. I”d be concerned about interfering.

Maybe we should keep learning, as we’ve been doing, to build better against them.

A nuke might have a better chance of knocking out a tornado. Oh yeh, and a whole lot of other things with it too.
But if there could be a targeted, non radioactive explosion to blow off the top of the tornado to disrupt the rotation what a benefit that would be.

If not that, perhaps a series of MOABs might work. With Soros strapped on to one of them.

Could we just drop a few “major media” correspondents around the edge? Their hot air and left ward spin should counteract it.

Nothing new. There were “weather mod” experiments going on in the 60’s.

I believe that that was actually proposed years ago. Whether or not Trump mentioned it, it was thought about by folks who’s IQs were decades higher than ANY journalist or dimbulbcrat congresscritter.

Fake news. Trump has some faults but stupidity is not one of them.

First off, it won’t work. People vastly overestimate the power of a nuke. When compared to nature herself, it’s not really that powerful.

Second, you’ll spread radioactive debris all over the place. It will go in the water. The wind will spread it into the upper atmosphere and carry it across the ocean.

Third, hurricanes actually have a function. They drop enormous amounts of fresh water into the ecosystem.

Hurricanes are very powerful storms. The energy and heat released in a hurricane is equivalent to a 10 megaton blast every 20 minutes.

We have been in the leanest hurricane years on record since 2006 when every media whore on the planet were screaming at the top of their lungs that cat 5 hurricanes were going to be weekly and kill us all.

good point

but maybe if the CommieNazi windbags are tossed into the hurricane in the opposite direction, the winds will cancel and calm will be restored?
