Dear friend,
This week, the Trump Administration announced plans to take $3.6 billion away from military construction projects so the President can build portions of his border wall. That includes taking away more than $77 million from projects in Virginia.
President Trump's decision to pull funding from critical national security projects is deeply concerning. Our military construction funding should be used for safety improvements that protect our troops and bolster our national security, not for a vanity project.
The Department of Defense informed me that the Administration plans to take funding away from the following military construction projects in Virginia:
The Cyber Operations Facility at Joint Base Langley-Eustis will lose $10,000,000 that was supposed to go towards construction of a Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility (SCIF) that's needed for the Cyber Protection Team to receive intel and perform the training required for the national security mission of the facility. The Navy Ships Maintenance Facility in Portsmouth will lose $26,120,000 that was supposed to go towards necessary safety upgrades, including fire protections to keep workers safe. A project to replace a hazardous materials warehouse in Norfolk will lose $18,500,000 that was supposed to go towards ensuring the safe storage of dangerous materials, including hazardous chemicals, to meet life and fire safety code requirements. A project to replace a hazardous materials warehouse in Portsmouth will lose $22,500,000 that was supposed to go towards ensuring safe storage of dangerous materials, including hazardous chemicals, to meet life and fire safety code requirements.
The well-being of American troops is the core responsibility of every commander in the military, yet the Commander-in-Chief is shirking that duty so he can advance his own political agenda.
I've been outspoken against President Trump's plan to take money from military construction projects since it was announced earlier this year, and I'll keep urging my colleagues in the Senate to join me in standing up against it.
Sincerely,
TimKaine
When a liberal Democrat starts kvetching about defense cuts, you know he’s full of crap.
I am fairly confident Trump did not decide which construction projects could be delayed himself.
The Pentagon should release a report which details the reasonings behind each individual construction delay.
Government needs to be managed more like a business and one aspect of that is a detailed risk/reward analysis.
Arent Democratics usually complaining about the military budget?
No, What is deeply troubling is that you were a few hundred thousand votes, (here and there) and a Hillary stroke from being President.
Democrats hate the military.
I went to Nile C. Kinnick HS, now at the Yokosuka NB in Japan, back in the late 1960s. Among the alumni there was a notice that, because of the $3.6 billion for the wall, the budget for Kinnick will be decreased by $40,000 this year. The leftists among the alumni point to this as proof that Trump doesn’t care about the military people and their dependents, while the non-leftists point out that $40,000 is about 1/3 the cost of one staff member, considering all the DODEA related benefits etc., so the school is unlikely to suffer greatly for the sake of protecting the country.
Then sponsor a bill to restore the funds.
The wall is a critical need. As a former Marine I’ll be the first to say that there is a lot of pork that can be cut from the defense budget, money that would be much better spent building the wall. When I was in far too much money was spent on things like multimillion dollar renovations to base family service centers that were 10 years old instead of things that improved warfighting capabilities. Fancy base day care centers and the like are pork that bring money to local contractors and keep the soccer moms voting for more while doing nothing to keep the country safe.
I’m all for shifting money from useless pork projects to the wall where it’s actually needed.
Timmy must be friends with Mike SLEEze and Mutt Romney.
OK progs, if they are sooo concerned about the military then cough it up from welfare and benefits going to illegal aliens.
.
Our country is SO much better than the idiots who get elected somehow to “represent” us.
According to OAN, so far this year the illegal aliens in the US has cost us taxpayers $180+ BILLION.Trump will be saving this country billions by building the wall. There is no legitimate argument to not build the wall using military funding because its all US taxpayers money.
I was born in Virginia and spent a good part of my youth there, graduated high school there.
How in hell can Virginians elect such a cretin? It’s got to be NOVA (Northern Virginia). The Beltway has spilled so much over the years into NOVA that Wash DC is effectively controlling a lot of the state.
Only hope is that federal government cretins see that they get to keep their useless jobs under Trump and will warm up to voting Republican or not vote at all which is preferable.
If it was up to me they would all be out beating the pavement looking for new jobs and careers rather than be wasted human space commuting or teleworking to DC.
Maybe in a 2nd term President Trump will address the useless sludge that is the federal bureaucracy. It’s really true that half of then could be gone tomorrow and no one would know the difference.
Obama also forced the budget sequester that took tens of billions from the military and hollowed it out. Kaine had no problem with that.

If you democrats weren’t playing politics with building a wall he wouldn’t have to. So it’s your fault not his.
Having a border security fence in good working order is a national defense priority, hardly a vanity project.
It’s actually one of the explicit enumerated items that fedgov is actually tasked with, securing the borders of tge country.
These guys argue that trannies deserve fed funds for their personal choices for chopadickoffamees and addadicktomees.
Now Mr Trump is turning the Collectivists into fiscal conservatives.
Dear Tim:
The military prioritized these dollars.
