Microsoft chief Brad Smith says rise of killer robots is 'unstoppable'
The Telegraph ^ | September 21st, 2019 | Robin Pagnamenta

The rise of killer robots is now unstoppable and a new digital Geneva Convention is essential to protect the world from the growing threat they pose, according to the President of the world’s biggest technology company.

In an interview with The Telegraph, Brad Smith, president of Microsoft, said the use of 'lethal autonomous weapon systems' poses a host of new ethical questions which need to be considered by governments as a matter of urgency.

He said the rapidly advancing technology, in which flying, swimming or walking drones can be equipped with lethal weapons systems – missiles, bombs or guns – which could be programmed to operate entirely or partially autonomously, "ultimately will spread… to many countries".

The US, China, Israel, South Korea, Russia and the UK are all developing weapon systems with a significant degree of autonomy in the critical functions of selecting and attacking targets.

The technology is a growing focus for many militaries because replacing troops with machines can make the decision to go to war easier.

Because anyone can do it.

That.

Hmm... What would MS do if the autonomous weapons systems refused the mandatory MS update?

Resistance is futile!

On the other hand, if these AI bots are running Windows 10, I'm not too worried. They go to a black screen before they can get a shot off.

“It’s called the Windows 23 operating system”

Yes, and it contains “the three laws”.

So the old 1950s sci-fi flick “Target Earth” is coming true, except the robots will be from earth instead of Venus?

The latest Win10 massive update/upgrade seems to have killed my tablet.

It took half a day to download and another half to install. Now, it reboots.

When I log in, it goes to the main screen. In a couple of minutes (or less) error messages pop up: fatal error, .net error, cannot continue, collecting information for mandatory reboot.

It has rebooted about 15 times in the last 2 days and still the tablet is unusable.

Killer robots may be unstoppable, but so is killer Windows10 Upgrade, it seems.

Let me guess, Brad and the team from Redmond have the solution for those killer autonomous robots.

Of course!

It's simple, really. Just require they all use Windows!

Is there a Mac list? I use my iPhone for everything. Perhaps I’ll replace my seldom used windows drudge machine with a Mac.

There sure is! Pinging Swordmaker, who runs that list -- all things Apple, Mac, iPhone, etc. Great stuff.

Unsolicited testimonial:

I use Windows, MacOS, and Linux all day, every day (I'm a system admin / dev-ops engineer at a software company). MacOS is my preferred platform of choice at home, because in my experience it's the most efficient and trouble-free of the three, and while you can get cheaper personal computers, you can't get better ones IMO. I use Linux (Ubuntu) at work because of the more terminal/commandline nature of my work. I have Windows VMs (virtual machines) on both the home and work machines, for doing those few only-runs-on-Windows tasks.

I would certainly encourage you to look into whether a Mac works better for you.

And finally, my standard tongue-in-cheek answer to "What kind of computer should I buy?" is:

"You, like all of us, are going to have issues with your computer.
They're unavoidable, and how you solve them is your choice.
If you want to solve issues with money, get a Mac.
If you want to solve issues with time, run Linux.
If you want an unpredictable hybrid of the two, try Windows."

Could it be Gort is the correct answer?

Agreed. It seems that Mutual Assured Destruction is the only deterrent that seems to work. Until a superior technology comes along, we need to be the best at the current technology.

I live in a rural meadow with all manner of wildlife, including deer ticks (Lyme). I suspect you're right.
