ROME — Pope Francis blasted religious fundamentalism Monday, telling an Argentinian interreligious dialogue group that fundamentalism is a “plague.”
“Beware of the fundamentalist groups: everyone has his own. In Argentina too there is a little fundamentalist corner,” the pope told his hearers. “And let us try, with fraternity, to go forward. Fundamentalism is a scourge and all religions have some kind of fundamentalist first cousin there, which forms a group.

This is a touchy subject for me, because I am no fan of the Pope, and don’t agree with the way he said it, but there is some truth to it.
I was in sunday school last weekend and one of the more dogmatic of our members said, out of the blue that “the bible is the word of God and it’s all you should ever need” or something like that.
Thing is, I definitely believe it CONTAINS the word of God, but there is also a lot of baloney in there. The problem is that a lot of folks believe that once you take my position, it is just a slippery slope to throwing the whole thing out. But it’s not, if the position is taken from a position of knowledge, and the increase of said knowledge as one continues to study actually not only prevents the slippery slope, but INCREASES one’s understanding of the parts that ARE the word of God as well as the parts that are NOT.
One important example of this is when people make the mistake of seeing the bible as a science book. It’s not. It does not pretend to be. When one tries to use it as a science book they are as on as shakey ground as using a cookbook recipe that shows how to make “car” cookies to claim that the cookbook tells us how cars work.
It is simply not its function.

That’s right. Being loyal to the fundamentals of Christianity is apparently a bad thing. He should lecture God that He is not flexible enough!
