Warner Bros. says newspaper out to 'malign' Richard Jewell by requesting disclaimer for female reporter

The controversy surrounding Richard Jewell is heating up.

Warner Bros. has released a statement responding to the Atlanta Journal Constitution’s demand for a disclaimer saying the late journalist Kathy Scruggs (portrayed in the film by Olivia Wilde) did not sleep with an FBI source for information in real life.

“The film is based on a wide range of highly credible source material,” the studio’s statement, obtained by EW, says. “There is no disputing that Richard Jewell was an innocent man whose reputation and life were shredded by a miscarriage of justice. It is unfortunate and the ultimate irony that the Atlanta Journal Constitution, having been a part of the rush to judgment of Richard Jewell, is now trying to malign our filmmakers and cast. Richard Jewell focuses on the real victim, seeks to tell his story, confirm his innocence and restore his name. The AJC’s claims are baseless and we will vigorously defend against them.”

According to WB, the disclaimer currently at the end of the film says, “The film is based on actual historical events. Dialogue and certain events and characters contained in the film were created for the purposes of dramatization.”

But other journalists are speaking out on social media against the depiction, real or dramatized, of a female journalist attempting to trade sex for information, especially since it did not happen in real life.

And you know for a fact that some or all female reporters don’t sleep for the story?

Most so called journalists are pretty much scum who would blow anybody for what they call a scoop!

Journos have no compunction against destroying people’s lives with little or no information. Yet make a allegation against one of them and.... OH NO! They really do think they are some kind of protected species.

I saw Midway yesterday; the only movie I've seen in the last 10 years or so. Well worth the ticket price (but smuggle in your own snacks).

Ford vs Ferrari is very good too, even with Matt Damon.

Baba Wawa is their role model.

She slept with Senator Edward Brooke. She said so herself. After he passed away.

Only living people can sue. Dead people have no reputation that might be harmed. One cannot slander a dead person.

In this case I am not inclined to go along with the AJC.

Why...it’s not like this sort of thing is uncommon. A woman using sex to elicit information from a male.

Let them prove she didn’t trade sex for information in this case, or any other.

sure you can. slander is slander whether you are sued or not.

You can wrongfully kill someone and not be tried. Isn’t that still murder? Murder is the wrongful taking of an innocent human life.

Lastly, you’re spinning the issue. Clint should step up and let us know what the deal is.

slander is slander

Yes. Slander is a false defamation. I don’t know what is false about the portrayal of the reporter. The newspaper does not know what is false about the portrayal of the reporter. The only person in a position to clarify is in no condition to complain.

I do not either, but Clint would know and he should answer the paper’s concerns. That’s the ethical thing to do.

a scene in which a reporter offers sex for a story would reflect on the paper not just the reporter.

I don’t understand. Do think Clint Eastwood has any first hand personal knowledge about this late woman’s dating habits? Do you believe he ever met her? I don’t know, but I doubt it. So how could Eastwood be able to answer the paper’s concerns if nobody at the paper nor Mr. Eastwood has any actual, verifiable, definitive information?

Surely a reporter wouldn’t tell her editor what she exchanged for the story. So the paper would have no reason to worry. It would reflect only on the reporter’s ethics. If it was true and they found out, they would have likely fired her.

Yes that was confessed in a tell all memoir. Apparently she slept with a few others as well...hence my role model designation.

In court, this is called "assuming facts that are not in evidence."

then the paper is in for an eye opener. The ethical thing for Clint rio do is rio respond. If it would hurt living people, then do it in private and tell people like us to stop worrying.

There was no evidence at all that the reporter slept with a source.

Actually, there is.

I was the source.

She slept with me.

She was sweeeeeeeeet......
