The original city is China’s sixth largest—the U.S.counterpart is roughly Phoenix, but though since China is much more urbanized, one in 70 people live in the Chinese city—though if you count the Phoenix urban area, you get about the same ratio. The quarantine is roughly proportional to having the populations of Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah quarantined

An eastern version of the analogy could likely be run, by I’m from the west. I think that North Carolina and West Virginia would give you about the right population for the present quarantine.

China is going to find it easier to simply release a list of the people who ARE permitted to travel.

Thank you, that’s a useful comparison.

[Are bats kosher?]

Bats are pretty similar to mice which are not kosher. My first guess was no. And I was right. From the source itself:

https://books.google.com/books?id=l0GXha1h3eIC&pg=PA91&lpg=PA91&dq=tinshemes+kosher&source=bl&ots=yeVaVz13TL&sig=ACfU3U0LeyNLvn8pmY62lWCXZOSFB_AqUg&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjJhP3R2Z7nAhWBBs0KHdqNB4QQ6AEwA3oECAkQAQ#v=onepage&q=tinshemes%20kosher&f=false
[And these you shall hold in abomination from among the fowl; they shall not be eaten; they are an abomination; the nesher, the peres and the azniyah; 14. The da’ah and the ayah according to its species; 15. the orev according to its species; 16. the bas hayaanah, the tahmas, the shahaf and the netz according to its species; 17. the kos, the shalakh and the yanshuf; 18. The tinshemes, the kaas and the raham; 19. the hasidah, the anafah according to its species, the duchifas and the atelef.]

Whether a bat is an atalef or a tinshemes, it’s treif, unless I’m reading this wrong.

[Correct, while Mr. Xi is the most powerful person in the party, he is still part of an oligarchy, not an absolute ruler. Other people want his jobs or fear a cult of personality. A crisis like this, If mishandled, makes him vulnerable.]

Not even for the greater good or out of any personal empathy - crises like these provide a window of opportunity to advance yourself to the head of the line at the expense of the incumbent. I’m sure Brutus was very idealistic guy, but one of his motivations was likely to set himself up as consul in Caesar’s place.

A crisis like this is a perfect pretext for Winnie the Pooh to enact extreme executive powers and completely lock-down the country.

Slight correction:

Seriously, how many deaths from Corona virus as opposed to @#$% illegal mexican drunk drivers like the one that hit me?!?

Coronavirus : The death toll stands at 41.

...(NHTSA) estimates that alcohol‐related deaths in 2017 were highest in Texas, California, and Florida – three states with large illegal immigrant populations as well as large populations in general.

Credit should go to Belloc, from whom I learned some useful pedagogical methods for social science. The man was a genius—and my favourite half of the Chester-Belloc.

Congressional districts are very useful for quickly coming up with the right approximations, and with 50 states coming up with a state or combination of states with a certain population percentage is a piece of cake.

Biolabs in Wuhan. Something has escaped the labs, and is basically a weaponized virus.

It’s a big country. See my post 21. It may be an over-reaction, it may be an under-reaction, or it may be on target for where they are now.

If they move to banning movement of anyone without permission within the next two weeks, which is entirely conceivable given the trajectory, then we are either looking at something used as a pretext for the biggest social clampdown since at least the cultural revolution or the biggest epidemic since 1918.

Chinese, being Communist dictators, hide the truth, so if 42 is what is being admitted, think what the real number is.

Unfortunately your tag-line may fit your post.

I find that link very scary, especially in conjunction with some earlier stuff I was reading (which was not as authoritative as the Daily Mail).

Developing my Phoenix-New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah analogy in post 21, that something pertaining academically only to Los Alamos becomes a factor in the region lends a ready explanation to what is going on.

Hopefully it is not something that has been weaponized. 10-40 percent is not good, but there have been things that have been a lot worse. At this point, I wood cotton to something that had a 5% rate and could be brought under control quickly.

56,000,000 out of 1,000,000,000 is a relatively small number. Not even 10%.

And we’ve seen “shelter in place” curfew orders in the USA in Houston and New Orleans for storms that didn’t even come through the area.

And we’ve seen “stay in your home” orders when the authorities were going door to door after the Boston marathon bombing even though the FBI had previously interviewed the perps and let them go.

I have Belloc’s book about hiking from France to Rome. I’m sure Tolkein read it before writing about the (non)crossing of the Misty Mountains.

I love travel writing, perhaps because I don’t go anywhere myself.

Based on what I’ve seen of Wikipedia entries for Chinese cities, their definition of city is a chunk of land incorporating over 10m people. Wuhan is 3,300 sq miles. That’s 5x bigger than even the biggest American city. The current quarantined land area, if you look at the radius from the center of Wuhan, seems fairly large - almost twice the size of NJ - perhaps going on 20,000 sq miles. Locking down an area that large is a pretty big job, considering plenty of people will be trying to get out of what they’ll have started to figure out is one gigantic open air hospice in all but name, populated with people who are either infected, or about to be infected.
