Why is COVID-19 worse than past viruses?

Why is COVID-19 worse than past viruses?

The 1968-69 Hong Kong flu caused 1 million deaths worldwide 6 months after the first case.

COVID-19 has caused 50,000 deaths 4 ½ months after the first case.

The link below contains a chart for the number of deaths from Pneumonia and Influenza in annual flu seasons (page S5).

http://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc/download?doi=10.1.1.323.4407&rep=rep1&type=pdf

Notice something familiar? Each year there is a sharp, exponential increase in flu deaths, just like we see with COVID-19.

How does the COVID-19 case/ death rate compare with past viruses 4 ½ months after the first case?

I can’t find that data.

What is different about COVID-19 that requires us to respond by mass hysteria and shutting down our world?

I have no idea.

Any suggestions?

ABSOLUTEY!...(and we thought the Saddam guy was nuts). At least our programmers have calculated in plausible deniability.

I believe it to be mostly two-fold: An effort by Chineseholes to use a bio weapon (which maybe didn’t go the way it was supposed to) AND Trump is President.

I have a theory, but no conclusive proof.

My theory is that the hysteria over Global Warming was based on scientists and their mathematical models extrapolating limited data out for a very long time period, and were alarmed at the predictions of global temperature rise and the resulting polar ice cap melting and ocean level increases.

Likewise, the hysteria over COVID-19 are based on scientists using mathematical models extrapolating very limited date (early data from Wuhan and Italy) out for a relatively long period, and were alarms at the predictions of horrendous death tolls.

The difference was that we as a collective world did not submit to the proposed drastic changes to our economies and lifestyles, and for the most part the predictions of disaster have thus far failed to materialize.

But for the COVID-19, we did submit to the proposed drastic changes to our economies and lifestyles, so we may never fully know if the predicted outcomes would have materialized.

Two words - Donald Trump.

The Establishment, in the past accept sometimes horrendous losses, for the sake of keeping things “open for business”. No lockdowns, no travel restrictions of much importance, and for the time, no “open borders” allowing mass migration or persons with relatively little or no documentation referring to their origin or current state of health to range freely across the world.

But now, the Establishment has lost control, or at least a large part of it, and they are looking for a scapegoat, whom they have identified as Donald Trump. So they are sabotaging him at every juncture, with disinformation, obstructive tactics and quasi-legal challenges to his authority as US President. So far, President Trump has swatted away most of these tactics, but the Establishment’s strategy and objectives remain the same - remove Trump and his allies from power, and re-institute the open-borders globalism they have embraced, The eventual success of establishing the Chinese Government, regardless of whatever ideology they may adopt, as the premier superpower in the world, is the horse they expect to ride to victory.

China successfully used this dramabug to get the anti-communist protesters off the street.

The anti-American liberal media is trying to use it to get Trump off the podium.

Who is dying?

People 65+ and way more likely 75+. I will say from what I have seen the dead are 99+ to have serious health issues.

Why are we locking down people under 65?

Almost 100% of those dying or even becoming seriously ill from this bs virus are past retirement age and their staying home would have NO effect on the economy.

Once again WHY are we locking down the country.....why?

The Chinese thought it was way worse than other flu type viruses. Their reaction to the escape, if escape it was, suggested that they thought it was much worse than it is, thought it was as bad as they had designed it to be. I believe the rest of the world reacted to the Chinese reaction, not to the actual progress of the bug.NSA would have had indications that this was a leaked(or planted) weapon and our own reaction was appropriate to that.

I suspect what you are is apparent to everyone here. It’s like having a baby with a full diaper in the room while the adults are trying to talk.

IS or IS NOT will be settled by data, not impressions.

The US populace should not be sacrificed on the alter of liberal or conservative opinion. Cold, hard facts are required.

Do you have any?

It is being used to create legal precedent for suspending the Constitution. It is being done incrementally by a popular President in good faith, and generally accepted as necessary by the people. But next time, it will be full “boot on necks”, Roman Legion martial law, and the Democrats in power at that time will cite these times as precedent.”

I suspect they will then been introduced to the true meaning of the 2nd.

For a flu virus that is one month in its attack on the US population, the statistics you quote are unknowable.

The proper comparison is the swine flu for which there was also no vaccine or preventive treatment. Unfortunately the statistics are not as clear as those that are reported on this one on an hourly basis. For the swine flo, H1N1, the CDC still lists ranges for cases, hospitalization and deaths. The R0 therefore is not reliable. Likewise the R0 for the regular flu which has a vaccine and treatment drugs is not comparable.

I agree the covid 19 appears to be more lethal than the swine flu but that may be because it affects the older population rather than the H1N1 which in 2009-10 affected the young who generally have more resistance.

There is a lot we don’t know and I agree with other posters that we seem to have jumped to the scary side of projections and worst case scenarios. Like in many things moderation of our reactions is in order.

I say when the death curve reaches its tipping point in a week or two we remove all economic restrictions and let the economy recover.

It’s not. H1N1 hit children and the middle aged. COVID 19 hits mostly the elderly who already have pre existing conditions. Imagine having a massive heat wave with on air conditioning. Something similar would happen.

Perhaps its more infectious, but its death rate is miniscule.

So I’m the 1 in 8 in my country who think the whole damn thing is over blown, and not worth shutting an economy down for.

Its really quite sad. In the 21st century I truly believe we over reacted to every outbreak, but this one takes the cake. Part media? Part officials erring on the side of caution by scaring the crap out of us? I don’t know, but my regard for humanity has hit a new low. How easily they are lead by the nose, no wonder we have given up so much liberty.

From what I’ve read, from several sources, it seems that COVID-19, a SARS virus, has been tampered with. Perhaps not engineered directly, but passed through animals which have the same receptors as Humans when it comes to acquiring a virus and allowing it to run rampant. SARS is already highly communicable, and it seems the public doesn’t know the relation between SARS and COVID. Say, “SARS” and see how people react.

It seems to mutate at the same rate as the seasonal flu, so there’s that as well. Regardless of whether or not I’m vaccinated for the flu, I always catch it; but it’s not as bad as it could have been when I received a vaccine.
