Mayor Eric Garcetti has asked Gov. Gavin Newsom to mobilize the National Guard to help Los Angeles deal with worsening looting, vandalism and violence on the streets.
The move comes less than an hour after the mayor expanded expanded a curfew, first set for downtown, to the entire city from 8 p.m. Saturday to 5:30 a.m. Sunday.
Sheriff Alex Villanueva said he is also seeking help from the National Guard.
The decision came as the situation in the Fairfax District deteriorated, with shops, including Nordstrom and the Apple store, vandalized and looted. A small police kiosk in the mall was set on fire.
At 7 p.m., the LAPD declared an unlawful assembly in an area between Melrose Avenue and 6th Street and between La Brea Avenue and La Cienega Boulevard. "Residents should stay inside. Business should close. Those on the street are to leave the area immediately," the LAPD said.
When a protester smashed the front window of the nearby Whole Foods with a hammer, some screamed, "Don't do that! Please!," while others cheered.
The protesters began to clash among themselves; those urging peace created a barricade of shopping carts around the store's entrance to protect it, but moments later, another group jumped the barricade and broke the store's door down.
More than three dozen officers stormed the scene from the west side, firing rubber bullets and sending hundreds sprinting. "Stop running!" one man screamed, standing atop a car with a megaphone. "Stand as one! Say his name!"

omg...they are looting on Melrose ....ummm..now im kind of a fan...lol
If they're outgunned or if this has reached such an absurd level then yes, ask for help. And yes, where is the NG?
But on some level, you have to ask...if all 9000+ police are on duty, and if they've had hours to plan and get intelligence and amass ordnance, and they're asking for the NG before it's dark...when this is all said and done some heads should roll.
When they go to the civilized areas their crap will not be tolerated.
Sure, in many areas the armed citizens are relatively few.
But Few may still be dozens per block not constrained by the sort of rules the cops are.
So dead rioters would be inevitable, and I genuinely feared my life and the lives of others would rule the day (Night!).
Hard to watch the 60 from a grave.
I know folk who lived in the valley area of Holly-Wierd during the Rotney King riots.
They and the neighbors barricaded the ends of their street and manned those barricades with a variety of firearms.
Cops driving past said nothing, nodded, or gave a small salute.
Their street was untouched by rioters.
The shopping district only a couple of blocks away was hit hard.
I expect a repeat, although the family I knew moved away.
***I watched the Joe Pyne show.***
Is this the Joe Pine who had a TV show on back around 1968? If so, I used to watch him all the time.
Who’s making sure people aren’t surfing?

One of them is the Political Commissar, who checks to confirm it is politically correct, and that the article conforms to the accepted Party line.
You think I'm kidding...
well half would be off duty to come in and relieve. Never know how long it will go. But add the SO and the cop there is some back-up. The sheriff’s deputies are more in the jails than on the street. LA is still a very large area including the county areas where the sheriff has to keep some people home.,
Too little, too late.
Understood and thank you. Pray for the police.
Garcetti hoisted on his own petard.
Schadenfreude anyone?
They cleared out Los Angeles right at curfew I have NEVER seen so many police!!
Those are reserved for anti lockdown protesters.
After hours shopping is kinder way of saying it. They sure don't fear getting caught from the looks of it.
I which they had told me they were headed to the Apple store i would have switched my blue mask for a black and red one.
The LASD patrols the unincorporated areas of LA county, and has several “contract cities” where they also patrol.
As you point out, the SO also staffs the county jail.
When a new deputy graduates from the academy, he or she is sent to the custody department for a couple of years before being sent to a patrol station for field training.
I wonder how they mutual aid during this type of stuff. Sometimes when you’re there, hard to tell if you’re in the county or the city. But those who work it every day know the boundaries and some of contract cities are easy to figure out.
Best wishes. Glad i’m not there.,
Wait until they figure out that left wing movie stars have millions of dollars of cash, gold and jewelry in their homes!
I sure hope he is handing out masks and telling them they can only stand on wet sand.
