When the war was over part of the reconstruction was to honor their place as American warriors. They were Americans in the end. It is a unique and honorable final chapter of a brutal civil war. I had not thought about that for years! I recall his girlfriend, a feisty little redhead, also part of the service. I think she was ‘helping him with his memoirs’.

After Obama was re-elected in 2012, all this came crashing down on Petraeus immediately afterward.
Their cause was wrong, but it’s also wrong to call them traitors. At the time, it wasn’t established that succession was not allowed. There was no precedent to draw upon. Suppose, when the Constitution was being formed, the southern states had been told that, once in/always in, no matter what. They most likely never would have joined the union, there would have been no civil war, and slavery could have lasted another 40 years.
