Trump Looking to Replace $600 Unemployment Benefit With Back-to-Work Bonus

Donald Trump is looking to replace the $600 a week Pandemic Unemployment Benefit with a back-to-work bonus that will incentivize working for many of the 30 million people currently receiving the enhanced benefit. The benefit is set to expire July 31 and Democrats want to expand it into next year.

A study done by the Federal Reserve found that the federal unemployment benefit was making it difficult for companies to hire workers as the economy reopens following the lockdown.

Barrons:

Even though the unemployment rate is expected to register over 20% for May in the jobs report the Bureau of Labor Statistics will release June 5, employers reported difficulty in hiring during the severe economic contraction resulting from the coronavirus shutdown.

“Contacts cited challenges in bringing employees back to work, including workers’ health concerns, limited access to childcare, and generous unemployment insurance benefits,” the Beige Book summary said.

That $600 a week is on top of state unemployment benefits that some states have also expanded. The bottom line is, workers are asking themselves why go back when I’m making more money sitting at home?

In particular, the various Fed districts noted the impact of expanded unemployment benefits, including the extra $600 a week under the Cares Act.

“Some businesses have already made efforts to recall laid off workers, as well as hire new workers. A number of these firms noted that this has been challenging, with many unemployed workers reluctant to return to work—some attributed this to generous unemployment benefits, as well as safety concerns,” according to the New York Fed.

“ How’s that for an ignorant rant???”

Pretty ignorant. But why the half measures? Clearly you can be much more ignorant!

It’s just a thought, but the “go over to the DU” business is just as tired as a lefty’s “ racist” when they got nothing.

I’ve got faith in you, keep up the bad work!

Software companies?

I’m guessing you have Free Republic confused with Indian Republic. Indians are the only ones hired for any type of Software Engineering work.

Truck Drivers? Will you fund the typical $4500 CDL school costs? Most OTR carriers only pay $1600 per month for the 1st two months while under training after your CDL and the $0.30 a mile (is less than $15 an hour), assuming you are driving when you are on duty. No pay for pretrips, weather delays, mechanical delays or dispatcher delays. No freight, no pay.

Home Depot, Walmart, Amazon? Great for only part-time work with no absolutely no benefits.

Some people have no clue. It was hard enough to find anything before Covid when I got dropped from disability at the beginning of the year, now I don’t even bother to look. I’m having to rely on family and am lucky to have it. But there are very few decent jobs anymore. The Indians have taken all the IT jobs and the Mexicans have taken all the low paying stuff. Not much left in a service economy.

no need to answer if you don't want to...but there are jobs out there...maybe you just don't have the qualification for them...

did you finish H.S. did you go to college, and earn a degree?

what is your age? just wondering..that's all.

Not only IT, thanks to Obama and his H4EAD executive order, Indians take most white collar office work in areas such as finance, medical and insurance.

Amazon, Walmart, Kroger, Albertson’s and probably most others are cutting back on both it’s total workforce and its workers hours and pay to pre-coronavirus levels. They have reverted back to minimum wage part-time work.

Service economy workers are still only working 1/4 of their hours and tips if their jobs were even opening back up in their sector, based upon how open a state can be.

Typical, f y’all attitude. I got mine, so f you. See that a lot here. Maybe they should get off their pedestal and try living on $176 per week that they suggest others to live by.

Guess they don’t really believe in free enterprise.

One laughable example was a snide comment about carnys. Servicing and supporting state, county and local fairs and festivals is a pretty much a individual or small business operation. Grab a lawn mower indeed.

We were forced into a service economy as most manufacturing went first to Mexico and then Communist China, and entire industries remaining the US have been reserved for foriegners - everything from construction to STEM fields.

Every one suggests a trade. Trade schools are expensive and not everyone is cut out for that type of work. Maybe if I started 35 years ago in a trade I would have been. Can’t wait a decade in a new trade to earn a living wage.

Wow, close. I have a MIS, MSc in Aeronautical Science and an MBA. Some PhD work in Computer Science. The MSc and MBA never used, so worthless degrees. 55 years old.

And now I can’t even get an entry-level job in software engineering now... Only Indians may apply.

Not disabled per the VA or the SSA, but have bad left arm, back and knees. So physical labor is impossible for me.

But yeah, I should just grab a lawnmover.

“ Yeah everyone has an extra $4,000 to $5,000 lying around to take CDL training”

Go read some of the trucker forums. They call truck schools “puppy mills”.
There may be a shortage of drivers but the bigger issue is a shortage of drivers willing to work for nothing.

“ Doesn’t this $600.00 thing, run out in July?

If so let it die...no bonus...let them get fired if they refuse to return to work...time to stop handing out FREE STUFF...liberals will never be satisfied. ..”

I think the assumption was we’d be well on our way back to normal by now. Instead schools are closed or only open a couple days a week, the jobs that could reopen are being closed again and they are talking about more lockdowns.

I’m against extending it but it’s a no brainer politically. You are handing the Dems a winning hand by reducing it, eliminate it and Trump will just get hammered.

I’ve worked with many nurses who had 2 or 3 jobs. If you want to work and can only work part time, get 2 or 3 part time jobs. (Hint -— you MAY have to work -— GASP -— more than 40 hours a week to make ends meet!) Do you know WHY immigrants do so well in our country? It’s because they’re willing to work as many hours as it takes, at any job they can find, and live in a small place with several extended family members, in order to prosper. And I’m talking legal immigrants. And they DON’T gripe about it; they’re thrilled for the opportunities.
(As far as the software industry, THAT’S the government’s fault for allowing it, and chain migration. You really can’t blame the immigrant. But my above remarks are NOT referring to software workers, but to lower income people).

Comments like this one with no context are reserved for rookies.

You sign up in May 2020, post on June 17, 2020 and then, more than a month later post this stupid one liner.

You caused me to waste several minutes of my dwindling minutes looking up what this comment was about.

Nit wit.

True. More OTR carriers will pay only $1600 or so for the first 2 months of driving. Let’s see. 70 hours per week driving at $400 ends up to be $5.33 an hour. Even after that, it’s $0.35 or so a mile. Loading/ unloading, office time, dispatcher delays, waiting for loads, weather and traffic delays, pre-trips are on your own dime. After a few years, yeah, $20 an hour equivalent.

You can blame the immigrant, especially in software. They bring their entire racist and castist Indian Culture with them. Once a single Indian gets hired, all other Non-Indians are gone within 6 months to a year.

Working in software engineering for over 30 years (nearing 35 years) means only jobs outside the field are part-time minimum wage manual labor work. Things I can not do due to arm, back and knee and other medical problems. Plus living a white-collar existence for my entire life means I’m severely lacking physical strength department. I tried since the big furlough and could not lift the weigh needed constantly, and the bending trashed my knees even more.
