Poll: Tuberville fares better against Jones than Sessions does; Both GOP candidates hold large leads

Polling results released by an Alabama-based, nationally respected data firm on Monday show that both former Auburn University head football coach Tommy Tuberville and former U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions would enter a general election battle against U.S. Senator Doug Jones (D-AL) with a sizable lead.

Cygnal, recognized as the nation’s most accurate polling firm during the 2018 midterm cycle, conducted a survey of 530 likely Alabama general election voters from June 13-16.

The survey had a margin of error of ±4.26%, utilizing a probabilistic mixed-mode method that included Interactive Voice Responses (IVR) from landline phones as well as SMS text-message and email responses. Cygnal is not working for a candidate or PAC involved in Alabama’s Senate race.

The survey showed that Tuberville would beat Jones by a larger margin than would Sessions.

The general election survey included respective ballot tests between each potential GOP nominee, Jones and independent candidate Michael Parrish.

Sessions would garner 44.70% in his hypothetical, compared to Jones at 35.20%. Another 17.50% of respondents were undecided, and Parrish took 2.70% of the vote.

Meanwhile, Tuberville received 49.70% in his general election scenario, with Jones at 35.70%, 12.70% undecided and 1.90% for Parrish.

Comparatively, Sessions would beat Jones by 9.50%, while Tuberville would beat Jones by 14.00%.

Breakdowns of the data show Tuberville fairing better than Sessions against Jones across almost all demographics.

“Tuberville is an open borders hack”

Sessions campaign is desperately pushing this canard.

“Trust Sessions.” - Even though President Trump endorsed Tuberville.

I’ll trust President Trump, thank you very much.

Very well and I am mistaken. Sorry to jump to conclusions. You do Sessions if you like that little Keebler Elf.

Tuberville will betray us on immigration. Sessions was always a solid conservative vote when he was in the senate. He was definitely the wrong person to be AG - He’s too honest for today’s toxic DOJ. I expect Tuberville to win, because all of the Auburn fans will vote for him, but I expect him to be another Richard Shelby - a weak reed when you need a vote.

We need this seat. Looks like we are going to lose Arizona & Colorado. And Maine is a toss-up.

Tuberville or Sessions - it won’t matter in November. That seat is a GOP pick-up.

Sessions was a staunch conservative during his time in the Senate - but as AG, he was an abject failure. In many ways, his lack of action led to delays in the Trump first term agenda getting thru.

I fear his return to the Senate. I somehow can picture him turning into a Romney-like clone who (pending Trump’s re-election) will side on the sidelines and take shots at Trump on a weekly basis.

Alabama needs new blood in the Senate.

“Like him or hate him, Sessions is a known quantity”

I’d say more unknown than known following his weak AG showing. I don’t think he is the same Sessions that was a solid Senator all those years. I think he’s been compromised.

He could have stepped down but he chose to stay as AG and did harm to President Trump.

Sessions might have a good heart, but he is an effing moron, who really screwed Trump with the Russia recusal, then he screwed up the DACA revocation. If we had a competent AG from the beginning, DACA would be gone, and instead of 3 1/2 years of Russia BS and impeachment, we might have gotten something done. He is a walking disaster - keep him out of any elected office.

Re: “Moore was just a marginal candidate popular only among hard core GOP loyalists.”

You forgot to mention that Moore had to beat the sitting GOP Chief Justice in a GOP primary in 2012.

Moore also faced a national Democratic Party campaign against him in the 2012 general election.

The Democrats spent zero money against Romney in Alabama in 2012.

Re: “Sessions screwed up the DACA revocation.”

I strongly disagree.

Sessions wrote the exact Executive Order that Trump told him to write.

In Trump's first campaign speech in 2015, Trump stated he would “end” DACA on his first day in office.

Five years later, please note that Trump has NEVER said that he wants to deport the DACA kids.

In fact, two appellate judges have pointed out that Trump has publicly stated that he does NOT want to deport them.

If Trump wanted to deport the DACAs, he could have done that his first day in office with this two sentence Executive Order...

“According to the exact language in the Immigration and Nationality Act, the DACA kids are unlawfully present in the USA. Therefore, I order the Secretary of Homeland Security to remove them.”

An Executive Order that enforces the exact language of a Congressional statute cannot even be reviewed by a federal judge.

But, Trump will never write an Executive Order like that - because Trump is never going to deport the DACA kids.

I think you may not be clear on why the supreme court blocked this. It has nothing to do with deportation, or the rights of the people affected by DACA, it was simply because the paper work was poorly written and incomplete.

Trump isn't a lawyer, and didn't tell Sessions how to right the rescission. The supreme court overruled the recision because it was poorly written, and didn't comply with Administrative Procedure Act. I.e., it was completely incompetent.

Bill Barr is resubmitting the paperwork to get rid of DACA, and I guarantee he will get it right, unlike the moron Sessions.

I have not read the Supreme Court case yet.

I assume it is exactly the same case that Judge Alsup decided in January 2018.

Alsup wrote this at the top of Page 2:

“All agree that a new administration is entitled to replace old policies with new policies so long as they comply with the law.”

Alsup then went on to note that Trump's Executive Order (written under the name of Sessions) simply wanted to terminate Obama’s DACA, which raised a multitude of legal issues.

Alsup bluntly asks Trump - why don't you just write a new policy that accomplishes your same goals?

Bingo!

Trump cannot write a new policy, because then it would become obvious that he - Trump - has no intention of deporting the DACA kids.

“That clinches it. I was for Sessions because he seemed a better bet to beat Jones. If Tuberville gets better numbers than Sessions vs Jones, then Tuberville is the man for the nomination.”

First, believing polls is a bad idea. Second, Trump wants Tuberville, so I’m going to do my part to give him to him. That’s the only reason I’m voting for Tuberville because I don’t know anything about him.

Starting out your comment with a personal insult is so effective in making your point. Normally I stop reading right there because, really, with that good an argument to make your point, where else is there to go?

I wonder if any of his former black Auburn players will step up and say that he said something racist?

You can bet BLM folks are ‘visiting’ some of those former players right now and putting the pressure on.

I’d go with Sessions. He’s already an experienced hand who knows how to legislate. Tuberville knows how to coach football. Two different skill sets. I don’t give a damn how well he did as Trump’s AG. He signed on to combat illegal immigration, not fight the deep state, the latter of which he was singularly bad at. But legislating, he can do and has done, and should be trusted and respected enough to be allowed to do again.
