NEW YORK (AP) California regulators have sued Cisco Systems, saying an engineer faced discrimination at the company's Silicon Valley headquarters because he is a Dalit Indian.
Indias caste system long placed Dalits at the bottom of a social hierarchy, once terming them untouchables. Inequities and violence against Dalits have persisted for decades after India banned caste discrimination.
The engineer worked on a team at Ciscos San Jose headquarters with Indians who all immigrated to the U.S. as adults, and all of whom were of high caste, according to the lawsuit filed Tuesday by the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing .
The higher caste supervisors and co-workers imported the discriminatory systems practices into their team and Ciscos workplace, the lawsuit says.
It says Cisco's treatment of the employee, who is not named, violated the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and California's Fair Employment and Housing Act.
The Civil Rights Act bans employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex and national origin. The lawsuit notes the employee is Dalit Indian, and that he is darker-complexioned than non-Dalit Indians.
It is unacceptable for workplace conditions and opportunities to be determined by a hereditary social status determined by birth, said DFEH Director Kevin Kish.

Make Cisco pay exorbitant fines and be placed under review for even hiring Indians in the first place.
you really have a massive hate for Indians.
They have destroyed a whole generation of American IT workers and now eliminating jobs for our new STEM graduates. The act as a mafia and hire only fellow Indians. They are enemy of the American worker and companies that employ them are traitors committing treason. Aside from that, almost every Indian I’ve ever met seems polite and are generally nice people. How about they go home, we can visit them there if we’d like. Give us our jobs and culture back. We don’t need Indian workers and we don’t need their tribal culture.
Ain’t diversity grand. Without importing other countries’ social problems the whole activist/lawyer industry built up around dealing with their problems wouldn’t have anything to do.
Agreed. We also don’t need their fake resumes, fake degrees, and fake skill sets.
Well, there are some positives: Some of them call me every day to let me know that my computer has a virus, while others try to reduce the interest rate on my credit card, and Ive even had one nice Indian man call just to tell me that I had won a prize. Theyre so thoughtful.
India today has an affirmative action program for the untouchable caste; positions have to be set aside for them so they can have some upward mobility.
Interesting. Is the suit, then, based on the idea that the discrimination is based on "color"? I would expect Hindus to contend that skin color can correlate with caste but is not actually related.
I agree.
Although not the whole story, I might still br working in IT in California, if EVERYBODY in IT in America wasn’t selling out America as fast as they possibly could.
Everybody.
Both parties.
Although, it did fix some important other issues.
Just saying.
My wife’s cousin was an engineer for Cisco and had to train his Indian replacement back in the 90s. He’s still pissed about that.
Best was to resolve the problem is to deport all the Indian engineers.
Yeah I was onboard later, mid-teens, I left after 20 years at a major IT place.
It was a good job and I liked it quite a bit.
Miss it. But I am happy with some of the changes, as well.
So no complaints from me, at the moment.
:)
> Some of them call me every day to let me know that my computer has a virus
Oh hi, Kitboga.
Import people from sh!t-holes, and youll learn pretty quickly why those places were sh!t-holes in the first place.
I had to do it twice. Got out of IT all together and became a day trader in the stock market. Never looked back.
We have tariffs on imported products, why none on imported labor (outsourcing of intellectual work overseas) or on importing foreign laborers?
Don't worry. You will see some transaction on your account. We need to clean it before we deposit the $10,000,000 you just won.
Why is CA doing something that will draw attention to just how much those Silicon Valley libs rely on H1Bs?!
I can’t believe CA wants to shine a light on this...
Maybe the discrimination was so blatant, California was left with no other choice.
I hope the poor fellow filing the complaint gets an outstanding settlement.
