MOSCOW - The Russian and Egyptian Navy are preparing to conduct maneuvers, the first of their kind in the Black Sea.

According to the press office of the Russian Southern Military District, representatives of the two armies held a three-day conference in Novorossiysk on the preparation of the joint exercises "Friendship Bridge - 2020", which will be held for the first time in the Black Sea.

The Black Sea is an inland sea located between the southeastern part of Europe and Asia Minor. It connects with the Mediterranean Sea through the Bosphorus Strait and the Sea of Marmara, and it connects with the Azov Sea through the Kerch Strait.

According to Russian media, including Russia Today, the two parties have agreed to a joint plan of maneuvers, whereby tactical groups of warships of the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Navy and the Egyptian Navy, with the support of aviation, will work on joint missions to protect sea routes from various threats.

Forces will be deployed to organize communications and replenish supplies at sea, as well as carry out inspections against suspicious ships, and launch missiles and artillery from ship weapons.

According to Moscow, the joint exercise aims to strengthen and develop military cooperation between the Egyptian Navy and the Russian Navy in a way that serves security and stability at sea, as well as the exchange of experiences between individuals in combating various threats in the areas of intense navigation.

In this context, the Egyptian navy must pass through the Bosphorus Strait and the Sea of Marmara to reach the Black Sea, as the Egyptian warships will pass near Istanbul overlooking the Mediterranean and located at the entrance to the Bosphorus, which Turkey controls to a large extent.

Egypt and Turkey have been major rivals in the Middle East and North Africa since July 2013, when a popular revolution in Egypt toppled former President Mohamed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood, who was supported by Ankara and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

In the beginning of October, the Egyptian and French naval forces carried out a transient naval exercise within the range of the Northern Fleet in the Mediterranean, in which an Egyptian stealth frigate and the modern Egyptian submarine (209/1400) participated with a French frigate.

The training included many different activities, including security and protection exercises for an area of importance against the threat of submarines at night, electronic warfare training, training in defense against atypical threats, as well as training on various sailing formations, in addition to the implementation of signal transportation exercises. The training also included simulations of protecting a ship of special importance while crossing a dangerous area, and exercises on the measures taken by warships of different countries to protect economic zones.

The training showed the efficiency of the Egyptian and French crews participating in the implementation of the tasks entrusted to them. These exercises, according to Egyptian and international media, came within the framework of supporting the pillars of joint cooperation between the Egyptian and French armed forces, and getting acquainted with the latest systems and methods of combat, in a way that contributes to refining combat and operational skills and experiences and supporting the efforts of maritime security, stability and peace in the Mediterranean.

It is noteworthy that last September, and despite all Ankara’s attempts to draw close to Egypt and its army in particular, the response came quickly from the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, which rejected and strongly denounced “Turkey’s continued attachment to totally counter-factual allegations in order to serve ideological trends.” The classification of the "Global Fire Power" specialized website revealed that the Egyptian army had surpassed the Turkish and Israeli armies in terms of strength and military capabilities, as it ranked first as the strongest army in the Middle East for the year 2020.

Egypt has two Mistral amphibious assault ships it bought from France, while Turkey has yet to launch its first amphibious assault ship, the TCG Anadolu ship. Turkey has faced difficulties in modernizing its fleet of combat ships, as it has only added four new ships to its navy in the last 25 years.

Wait.

So the Russians sell s-400 systems to Turkey.

Turkey gives the Russians NATO codes so they can use the S400 systems to track NATO jets (an item posted earlier). It also meddles in the Azerbaijan-Armenia conflict on the Muslim side.

And Russia then stages exercises with Egypt outside Istanbul?

Erdogan is nuts and evil, but the Russian role leaves me confused.

Interesting news. Turkey does have a fairly large navy by area standards, but it's old. Recent developments regarding differences with Greece over oil exploration have turned a focus on its amphibious capabilities - limited at best. These are arguably the most strategically significant waters in the world, and one suspects that the Russians are watching this development very closely.

OTOH, you don't need much in these constricted places - a single Turkish minelayer named Nusret dropped 26 mines in 1915 and changed the entire course of WWI.

I’d prefer it to be called Constantinople.

But that name was removed by Muslim conquest long long ago.

I think it is interesting news. It may be signs of some improvement in the Middle East issues.

President Trump has been in the news a lot related to that lately.

I agree it is interesting.

Am no fan of Egypt. They have made persecuting Christians a cottage industry.

The Egyptians I have exchanges with became my friend as consequence of my habit of following news about people who seek to be free in really bad parts of the world.

I was following events in Egypt before the stolen Egyptian Election that brought Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood to power. I worked with several there and a blogger who were very informed about the reality on the ground.

Obama helped finance Morsi and Hillary and Ambassador Patterson threw Egypt to the Islamist wolves.

A year later the Egyptians rebelled with millions in the streets demonstarating. Morsi ordered then General Sisi to fire on the civilian Egyptians. He refused and arrested Morsi and many of the Muslim Brotherhood Terrorist leaders.

Obama did everything in his power to put Morsi back in power. Nobody was buying that. He suspended aid to Egypt and threatened a lot of other things. Sisi held his ground and Saudi Arabia and others helped them stabilize the country.

Those people I worked with then are still very good friends today.

Egyptians know about Russia. They probably do some business with them. They are NOT surrogates of Russia.

Egyptians are not NATO members.

The straits have always been strategic marvel. That is how Constantinople was conquered. Ancient people were able to divert the Strait and allowed the Conquest.

Russia understand how strategic it is to the region.

Well, since the overthrow of Morsi, that has not been the case.

President Sisi promised to rebuild many of the Churches in Egypt. He has done exactly that. There are still Terrorists who do as you say, but every time they peek their heads up for one of those acts. The Egyptian military kills them.

And they have worked closely with the Israeli government to help stop the tunnels and problems in Gaza.

I’ve watched this a long time. I know how it played out after Morsi. Now President Sisi has been a blessing to Egyptian Coptic Christians and to the region. He has been an honest partner with many in the region.
