Northern Ireland sees 3rd night of unrest amid post-Brexit tensions

Masked loyalists are seen after hijacking and setting a car on fire at the Cloughfern roundabout in Newtownabbey, Belfast, Northern Ireland, Saturday, April 3, 2021. Masked men threw petrol bombs and hijacked cars in the Loyalist area North of Belfast. Loyalists and unionists are angry about post-Brexit trading arrangements which they claim have created barriers between Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK. (Peter Morrison/PA via AP)

The disturbances followed unrest Friday and Saturday in unionist areas in and around Belfast and Londonderry, also known as Derry, that saw cars set on fire and projectiles and gasoline bombs hurled at police officers. Police said 27 officers were injured, and eight people have been charged, the youngest a boy of 13.

Britain’s economic split from the European Union at the end of 2020 has shaken the delicate political balance in Northern Ireland, a part of the U.K. where some people identify as British and some as Irish.

A new U.K.-EU trade deal has imposed customs and border checks on some goods moving between Northern Ireland and the rest of the U.K. The arrangement was designed to avoid checks between Northern Ireland and Ireland, an EU member, because an open Irish border has helped underpin the peace process built on the 1998 Good Friday accord.

If the EU is trying to unite Ireland, it probably is.

The only thing the EU said was “let’s respect the Good Friday agreement to keep no borders on the island of Ireland. And don’t bully our member-state Ireland”

This option that Boris signed whereby politically NI remains in the UK, while economically it is part of a wider Ireland is the only sensible option - these unionists are fools. They get what they want “NI in the UK”, so why are they making a fuss? If they keep doing this, they’re going to push more Northern Irish who would have wanted to keep the status quo (i.e. remain part of the UK) to thinking “let’s reunite with the RoI”

If you think that this would push Unionists to turn pro-EU, think again.

The unionist vote is not a monolith.

The bulk of Northern Irish are happy with Boris' plan whereby NI remains politically in the UK and economically one with the RoI.

However, this violence by extremists is pushing unionists to favor reunion with the republic

That’s the silly bit - this deal that Boris put out whereby the island of Ireland remains without a border and NI remains politically part of the UK worked well.

Politically - still the UK.

Economically - no disruption as the bulk of NI’s trade is with the Republic and secondarily with the rest of the EU. It does put some delays on trade with the rUK, but that is a couple of days delay and not affecting them generally.

The protesting seems nonsensical.

My brother-in-law was once a member of the Royal Ulster Constabulary (now the Northern Ireland Police Service) during the troubles. He tells me that the troubles never stopped. They just don’t use bombs like they used to. They still shoot each other and firebomb houses and cars. You know, like Detroit with foreign accents.

SmokingJoe The entire article is pure propaganda, dirty tricks and disinformation. Total unadulterated crap.

hmm... which parts are disinformation in your opinion?

Masked loyalists are seen after hijacking and setting a car on fire -- are you saying they were masked or that they weren't loyalists?

The disturbances followed unrest Friday and Saturday in unionist areas in and around Belfast and Londonderry, also known as Derry, that saw cars set on fire and projectiles and gasoline bombs hurled at police officers. -- are you saying there weren't disturbances?

Police said 27 officers were injured, and eight people have been charged, the youngest a boy of 13. -- are you saying this is false? what are your numbers?

Britain’s economic split from the European Union at the end of 2020 has shaken the delicate political balance in Northern Ireland, a part of the U.K. where some people identify as British and some as Irish. - are you saying that Brexit has NOT shaken NI?

A new U.K.-EU trade deal has imposed customs and border checks on some goods moving between Northern Ireland and the rest of the U.K. - are you saying it has NOT imposed customer and border checks on some goods?

an open Irish border has helped underpin the peace process built on the 1998 Good Friday accord. - are you saying this isn't true?

Which parts are propaganda and/or dirty tricks and/or disinformation in your opinion and what proof do you have for that?

Um you may want to check with your brother in law again:

Dec 26, 2020 · Northern Ireland's murder rate has fallen sharply in 2020 - down by a quarter from last year. A ccording to the PSNI, 19 murders have been reported here so far this year. This compares to 25 last...
