Florida Highway Patrol pilot temporarily blinded in the sky by a laser, lands his plane, makes an arrest

ORLANDO, Fla. — Temporarily blinded Saturday morning by a laser pointed at him from 1,000 feet below, a Florida Highway Patrol pilot alerted other aircraft about the flying hazard then landed his plane and began an investigation that led to the arrest of a Kissimmee man at a multi-story construction site.

Guillermo Negron Roque, 47, was jailed pending a charge of pointing a laser light at a pilot, a second-degree felony.

The bright flash of green light startled FHP pilot J.C. Pollock as he was flying west of Interstate 4 about 6:30 a.m.

“At first I thought I was about to have a mid-air collision with another aircraft and the color green I was seeing was a navigational light from another aircraft,” Pollock wrote in a report. “The flash of green light was so bright that I temporarily experienced blindness.”

After refocusing, Pollock traced the laser’s light trail that had flooded his cockpit to a work site at the Dr. Phillips Academic Commons on West Livingston Street, part of the University of Central Florida’s downtown campus. According to his report, Pollock landed at Orlando Executive Airport, hopped into his patrol car and drove to the area where he believed the beam had originated.

A construction supervisor confirmed he had seen someone at the site using a laser but was unsure who it was.

An example needs to be made of idiots who this sort of thing. It isn’t the pilots life being endangered it is the people on the ground who may get killed if the illegal actions result in a crash.

There should be a high visibility trial and the maximum sentenced imposed. Perhaps that will deter the next moron who thinks doing this is funny.

Industrial lasers have a range safety and green lasers are rarely used for measuring, line demarcation, levelling, etc., because they are considerably more expensive and no more useful than red lasers.

This is absolutely intolerable. Against police officers during looting riots or plane pilots or anyone at any time.
Along with throwing acid in faces.

Being soft on crime ( Dems ) has led to this and just has to be reversed.

Chinese:
Feb 28, 2020 — The US Navy said Thursday that a Chinese military warship fired a laser... at cockpits, temporarily blinding pilots.

JOSEPH TREVITHICK Article @FranticGoat reprinted in The Drive:

The U.S. Navy’s official Instagram account has issued a curious warning of sorts informing the Chinese military that it doesn’t want to “play laser tag” with it in the future. This comes a day after reports emerged that a People’s Liberation Army Navy destroyer had aimed a laser beam at a Navy P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft flying in the Philippine Sea earlier this month.

The Navy has now confirmed that the incident in the South China Sea took place on Feb. 17, 2020, and that it involved a P-8A from Patrol Squadron 45 (VP-45), which is headquartered at Naval Air Station Jacksonville in Florida.”

Remark was made on Instagram from US Navy:
“You Don’t Want To Play Laser Tag With Us” After Pacific Incident”

Not a green laser. Those kinds of things use red lasers.

47 is much too old to be playing childish, dangerous games.
