Five people are dead, including two North Carolina sheriff's deputies, after a check on a person who did not show up for work ended in gunfire and a 13-hour standoff, authorities said.

Watauga County Sheriff K-9 Deputy Logan Fox died at the scene in the Blue Ridge Mountain town of Boone, and Sgt. Chris Ward died after being flown to a local hospital, the sheriff's office said in a statement. The deputies were shot after entering the home. They were responding to a call for a welfare check Wednesday after the homeowner's employer reported that the person did not show up for work and was not answering their phone, according to the statement.

How awful- I’m so sorry your friend died- and for the suffering in your town. May God comfort and ease your pain.

Not certain but it is the closest house to the parking lot, sits in the center of the field to the left of the church and parking lot.

The church is over a mile away from the scene. The house is in a small enclave of homes just off the Blue Ridge Parkway.

How awful...

Thank you for your sentiments. Sergeant Ward was a great person, a fantastic father and husband, and a big loss to the sheriff's department and the county.

As it happened, he may have stopped a bigger event that could have been much worse, so in that sense, he was a hero along with Deputy Fox.

I was among those providing assistance at the church to the various law enforcement members and witnessed a female officer crying inconsolably in her car. We are a close-knit region, and there are many affected by this.

Here's what the houses resemble where the event took place.
Just a few doors away.

All involved were white. The shooter had serious mental illness, and his parents were trying desperately to get help for him. It’s virtually impossible to force a mentally ill adult to get help.

Sorry. I graduated from App and worked at Tweetsie for 3 summers so I know a lot of locals.
I was also on campus at Virginia Tech during the shooting. Don’t be shy about talking to someone. It helps

“The shooter had serious mental illness, and his parents were trying desperately to get help for him.”

His only condition was that he was a mother murdering cop killing thug.

Thank you, FRiend for the report clarifying. Media has no clue as usual. The formal sheriff’s report will fill this out, what this guy was visited for. His poor parents (at what age living with them still? etc. jobless? un-hireable?). Very sad, the family had little recourse it seems.
