Yup. all those things that the dreaded vaccines banished from childhood. People forget not that long ago half of children died before reaching adulthood
There was a reservation a few miles away.
The rate of alcoholism, neglect and violence was very high on the reservation.
Much of it seemed coincident with how much money they got from the federal and state governments.
Perhaps not as bad as some urban ghettos, but similar problems.
I had Indian friends tell me the people who could leave the reservations, did, and made their way in the world.
Those are all still problems today.
I have a few friends who left and didn’t look back. I’m friends with the local chief, and they don’t really call the cops anymore. I’ll get a text with a picture of a problem vehicle and names of occupants, then it gets handled. Some lads have given up making trouble, but some never will
Thank you for helping to turn around the idea that two to three kids a year for 85 years, relative to what goes on routinely in First Nation Villages even today (in terms of deaths), is by itself an indictment of the Christian effort to help these kids for those 85 years. To be certain, it IS an indictment against the horrible news media in this country.
I’ve been in many of these villages and the one over whelming feeling is to “get out” and “never come back”. That’s how bad they are.
But I thought only the evil Americans did things like this?

I do tours at a historic cemetery and I can tell you that our visitors have no idea about health conditions prior to the discovery and development of antibiotics and vaccines.

Yes I am less interested in the actual event and more how it is going to super power the cancel culture cultists. Jason Kenney in Alberta made a brave stand against this cancel culture yesterday. MacDonald and Laurier, and McKenzie King were all great men. As for charging those leaders he adopted eugenics, who WASN’T part of the eugenics movement? Winston Churchill was into eugenics and quickly reversed his stance after WWII.
But the thing is how is it “news”. They went LOOKING for these dead kids, so someone or many people already knew about it.
I’m still confused here though. Is the implication that these kids were MURDERED? I know the residential schools were misguided and cruel, but would Roman Catholics really go out and murder these kids?
Large death tolls among Native Americans from disease are not uncommon. European diseases wiped out far more Natives than did bullets and war. Natives were already being ravaged by epidemics in the mid Sixteenth Century. DeSoto travelled through the South in the 1540s and found uninhabited bone riddled villages. New England Indians had already suffered such death that when the Puritans began to land in the 1620s there were few Natives left to resist. Between 1492 and 1600 virtually the entire Native population of the Caribbean was wiped out. When Cortez conquered Mexico in 1521 there were an estimated 20 million Indians. A century later there were no more than 2 million. In 1837 an epidemic swept through the tribes along the Missouri River and nearly wiped out the entire Mandan tribe. In 1763 British Colonel Jeffrey Amherst intentionally killed thousands by spreading smallpox among the Indians of the Midwest to put down Pontiac’s war.
In Oklahoma I live near a number of Indian cemeteries. When you walk through one of these it is a sad thing to see the ages of the people buried there. So many of them are children, and if you look at the dates of death you also notice that many of them died within a close time period. Children who appear to be of the same family dying within days of one another. No one today in the United States knows the true devastation of what disease can do to a population. We see the individual sadness as we lose loved ones, but imagine losing your children, your parents, your friends, and much of your community all dying within a few short weeks.
When you know the historical context of disease it is not hard to imagine an entire Jesuit school full of Native children being wiped out within a brief period of time. I doubt there was any attempt to coverup these deaths, but if there was it was likely by an embarrassed, incompetent administrator and not by the Canadian government. As a side note my own Great Grandmother, a Scottish woman with a Scottish husband, gave birth to 13 children. Disease took 8 of them before the reached adulthood.
