Simone Biles Withdraws From Individual All-Around Competition

Simone Biles, the superstar gymnast from the U.S., will not participate in the individual all-around competition at the Tokyo Games and will instead focus on her mental well-being, USA Gymnastics said in a statement early Wednesday.

The decision comes a day after she pulled out of the team all-around competition.

Jade Carey, who finished ninth in qualifying, will take Biles’ place in the individual all-around competition.

"After further medical evaluation, Simone Biles has withdrawn from the final individual all-around competition at the Tokyo Olympic Games," USA Gymnastics said in a statement posted on Twitter Wednesday night. "We wholeheartedly support Simone's decision and applaud her bravery in prioritizing her well-being. Her courage shows, yet again, why she is a role model for so many."

The statement said Biles will be evaluated daily to see if she can "participate in next week’s individual event finals."

Naomi Osaka set the new standard of withdrawing from important competitions citing the inevitable “mental stress”. Biles first of all lets her team down in the team event so the Russians can win, and followed it up be letting herself down too.

I’d dismiss the tennis players out of hand. They’re professionals who get paid huge sums of money to compete in their regular tournaments. I’m surprised many of them even bother competing in the Olympics at all.

For gymnasts, the Olympics are the only event where they get much public exposure at all. And your comment about “training for four years” misses an obvious point: In this case it’s FIVE years because the 2020 Olympics are being held in 2021. I wonder how much this disruption and COVID-related anxiety has to do with some of these meltdowns.

About the tennis players, Osaka withdrew from the French Open after she was fined for declaring she’d boycott all press conferences. She then refused to turn up for Wimbledon as well. Those are two of the 4 majors with all the money, prestige and publicity that come with them.

[Blind Gossip] One of the reasons team sports are so interesting is the necessity to balance not only their talents, but their egos as well.

Like many teams, this team has a star… and then everyone else.

That’s a problem.

This star may be the most famous member of their team, but that doesn’t mean that they are the most popular member of the team.

In fact, the other team members are decidedly unhappy with their star right now.

I only talked to one of the girls about the situation but supposedly they all feel the same way. They are super pissed off. She said that [Star] is acting like a f*cking prima donna. They are competing with injuries and giving it 110% while she is quitting.

They are sick of her getting all the attention when she is the most selfish teammate ever. Demanding and whining, always expecting special treatment, totally out for herself.

They call her Queen B, but the B doesn’t stand for a name like Beyonce.

Queen B = Queen Bitch.

Ouch.

What do they think the real reason is for her quitting the team competition?

They don’t have to think about it. They KNOW the real reason why she quit! She wants to save herself for individual glory because that’s where the sponsor dollars are.

They hate her right now. Of course they would never ever say that to the press. They will smile and act like one big happy fake family.

While her Olympics -sized ego and failure to put her team above herself means that Queen B’s own teammates hate her right now, that’s of little importance to Queen B.

She is still the greatest at getting all the attention.

All the glory.

And all the dollars.

That fawning coverage is going to continue, and all the fake sweetness, light, and spin is going to make people turn away and tune out.
