Two top Democrats are asking the General Services Administration to terminate the lease of the Trump International Hotel in Washington, D.C.
A letter sent Thursday by New York Rep. Carolyn Maloney, chairwoman of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform, and Virginia Rep. Gerald Connolly, chairman of the Subcommittee on Government Operations, argued that the lease should be terminated in light of the Trump Organization's longtime accounting firm saying it could not stand by nine years of financial statements prepared for the company.
"New information, including that former President Trump may have submitted inaccurate financial information to the federal government to obtain this lease and that he stands to reap millions in profit from selling the lease, reinforce the serious ethical and legal concerns previously raised by the Committee," the letter reads.
The letter claimed that "at least one financial statement with possible material misrepresentations" was submitted as part of former President Donald Trump's bid for the Old Post Office building lease.
The Trump Organization is in the process of selling the hotel to CGI Merchant Group for $375 million. The letter said the committee was informed Feb. 1 that the GSA has begun a 45-day review period to consider the sale and decide whether to approve it.
"No one should be rewarded for providing false or misleading information to the federal government or for seeking to profit off the presidency,” the letter says, pointing to possible profits from the sale.
Last week, Trump's longtime accounting firm, Mazars, said financial statements from June 2011 to June 2020 could no longer be relied on while denying that they have found any evidence of discrepancies.
The firm said it cut ties with Trump and his organization as New York Attorney General Letitia James continues a civil investigation into the group.

I don’t think they can just cancel the lease since Trump apparently paid the bills to renovate and convert the property into a hotel to begin with. Trump spent around 200 million dollars on renovations and conversions of the building from Federal offices into a luxury hotel. The building had originally been the headquarters of the US Post Office.

Based on things said last year, the hotel’s profitability is questionable. The lease was up for sale in Nov 2021, and I think Trump was supposed to be getting around $370-million for the property.
Even Trump himself mentioned it.

An accounting firm retroactively renouncing financial statements THEY audited in the past are admitting their own ongoing fraud. This is ridiculous. This is nothing but politics and not based on accounting principles.
