"I applaud her for that, and that's a fantastic achievement," the Sex Pistols frontman added of the upcoming Platinum Jubilee
John Lydon has said in a new interview that, ahead of the Platinum Jubilee, he is “actually really, really proud of the Queen for surviving and doing so well”.
The Sex Pistols frontman was speaking ahead of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, which will be celebrated in the UK from June 2-5 to mark Queen Elizabeth II’s 70 years on the throne.
To mark the occasion, Lydon’s former band are reissuing their classic anti-monarchy single ‘God Save The Queen’. Speaking to Piers Morgan on TalkTV last week about the monarchy, Lydon explained that ‘God Save The Queen’ was “anti-royalist, but it’s not anti-human”.
“I’ve got to tell the world this. Everyone presumes that I’m against the royal family as human beings, I’m not,” Lydon said. “I’m actually really, really proud of the Queen for surviving and doing so well.
“I applaud her for that, and that’s a fantastic achievement. I’m not a curmudgeon about that.”
Lydon did add: “I just think that if I’m paying my tax money to support this system, I should have a say so in how it’s spent.”
The singer also said that he doesn’t believe the monarchy in the UK will last much longer “because Prince Charles is not going to be able to handle it”, adding: “This is the man that plays Pink Floyd to his cabbages.”
“That’s a shame in itself too, because I do love pageantry,” Lydon continued. “I’m a football fan, how could I not? I like watching royal weddings, because I love watching Spitfires and B-52s and the like flying over the palace. I get quite emotional with all that.
“I love me country, I love me people and everything about it. But if there’s problems within it, I think I have the right to say so.”
Speaking to NME recently, Vivienne Westwood said that while Lydon was a “sensation” with the Sex Pistols, he “didn’t have any more ideas” when the band split.
All rock/pop song lyrics are juvenile and asinine.
At best, some less so…
But she ain't no human being is pretty clear.
I really don’t think you understand. Even at the time it was written it was understood to be exactly what he says now (anti monarch). I know, I was there. The pistols and many punk bands expressed the frustration among poorer youth in England who felt (somewhat legitimately) that they were doomed to wallow at the bottom of the social ladder with no way of getting out and upward. They looked at the monarchy as representative of a caste system in England where if you were born poor, you basically stayed poor.
“She ain’t no human being” is very clear and refers to the idea of kings and queens as being interchangeable and not a single person. If the queen had been Betsy Boop she still would have had as much power, wealth and influence as Elizabeth. The queen is the female monarch, always was and it did not matter what her name was, it was the title that mattered.
The first thing you do when you want to tear someone down is make them less then human.
Which is exactly what he said.
I think you take lyrics wayyyyy too seriously and miss the entire point of the song. Are you familiar with the Police’s “Every Breath You Take” ? Do you think it is a wonderful love song ??? Lots of people do and it was a hugely popular song at weddings. According to Gordon Sumner “Sting” who wrote the song, It actually is written from the point of view of an obsessive stalker. Believe it or not, song lyrics and poetry are not always to be taken literally.
The queen is letting bygones be bygones. She reportedly wants representatives of all the communities who span her 70-year reign, including the punk rockers, to have some kind of presence or recognition during her Platinum Jubilee.
No, because I do take lyrics seriously.
He said what he said.
You want to think he was joking that is your business.
You probably think the San Francisco Sodomites and Pedophile Choir was just light heatedly joking when they sang "we are coming for your kids" too.
I believe people mean what they say and say what they mean.
It is, of course, your privilege to think everyone is a liar.
Good grief.
Reality exists no matter what blanket you want to throw over it.
I’m not a big fan of rock music, but there have been a lot of popular songs that have been very poetic and beautifully written.
