Pollster: GOP looking beyond Trump in early primary and caucus states
Washinton Examiner ^ | July 13, 2022 | Paul Bedard

Republican pollster Rick Shaftan is like a lot of political junkies: He looks to his mother for hints on what real America is thinking. Lately, their talks have been about former President Donald Trump and whether he should run again. SNIP Of course, Trump does make some news, but it's mostly complaining about the 2020 election results and cheering on some 140 GOP candidates he has endorsed for 2022 who have won so far. SNIP “It’s actually even worse than it appears for Trump,” said Shaftan, whose new poll shows a dramatic drop in support for Trump in Iowa and a bump up for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. “No. 1, he keeps talking about 2020, which is the past. It's ancient history to people. What it says to people is that he's more interested in himself than attacking Biden, going after the Biden agenda."

I think people, given what we are living through right now, have become keenly aware of how important it is to win in 2024. Many appear to be wondering if Trump gives us the best chance of winning. I don't think he does, but if he is nominated I will vote for him, and cross my figures. BTW, I don't know who the Dems will run in 2024, but it won't be Biden.

“Republican pollster Rick Shaftan is like a lot of political junkies: He looks to his mother for hints on what real America is thinking.”

This faux folksy stuff is just awful when done by people from either party.

You are correct, it is (rightly) about having the best chance to win. I’m looking for whatever candidate promises to be the hardest on election cheaters. I’m sure there is a position on it that is too extreme, at least in theory.

Many appear to be wondering if Trump gives us the best chance of winning. I don't think he does...

Without the fraud, he won twice. He greatly increased the number of votes that he got. He is leading an Hispanic insurgence in the Republican Party, something no other Republican presidential candidate has ever done.

Yet, want to switch course.

Well, okay then.

People are being asked the wrong questions.

They should be asked if they want the same kind of policies for the economy and energy and the border and for foreign relations and for the military. If they do, which I’m sure most do, then, they would be asking for Trump in 2024. There is no certainty that any other republican would have as good a presidency as Trump did, not even DeSantis.

I watch all the Trump rallys online, and President Trump constantly lays into the Biden agenda, and Biden’s many failures.

The GOPe types should watch a Trump rally sometime.

Everyone I know and let me tell you it’s a large group, have not changed their minds about voting for Trump if he runs in 2024. And you know what’s really surprising is that many Hispanics that I personally know who are die hard Democrats will crawl through broken glass to vote for Trump! That speaks volumes.! So don’t believe the BS coming out of any demonic despised mediapuke crooked polls.

[[There is no certainty that any other republican would have as good a presidency as Trump did, not even DeSantis.]]

Exactly. Folks posting about how innefectual Trump supposedly was are unaware of jusy how much he really did for this country. He delivered where others only promised to deliver but never even bothered trying to deliver once they became president, and he de,ivered despite fierce opposition from democrats and from rinos.

Washington Examiner is a NeverTrump stronghold, so this article needs to be read with that in mind.

Trump, after learning how malignant the swamp has become during his first administration, now has a better grasp of what needs to be done to clean out the Capitol District than any major politician in my lifetime. So he has my full support if he’s healthy and runs in 2024.

OTOH, it’s prudent to think about a plan B if his health deteriorates or he doesn’t run. Does DeSantis have the same fire? I gather that he’s good, but does he have what it takes to raze the bureaucracy in Washington? No president can unilaterally reform the corrupted institutions that are dragging our country down (media, academia, entertainment, etc.), but we at least need someone who will fight back and reform the institution of federal government that _is_ nominally under his control.

Delighted with those questions. But you have to add this one: if we nominate Trump, will we actually GET those policies? If he doesn’t win — actually win, and occupy the Oval Office, then we won’t get the policies. The question si how we WIN. That, sadly, involves actually figuring out how to persuade people who aren’t already on the team to vote for what we want. That’s what politics is. That’s what we should all be thinking about.
