Lindsey Graham says he’s ‘confident’ Americans would support national abortion ban

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) on Sunday expressed confidence that the public would support his 15-week federal abortion ban proposal but acknowledged it does not have the votes to pass the Senate.

“I’m pro-life, even in an election year,” Graham told “Fox News Sunday” anchor Shannon Bream.

“I am confident the American people would accept a national ban on abortion at 15 weeks,” Graham said. “And to those who suggest that being pro-life is losing politics, I reject that.”

The South Carolina Republican on Tuesday introduced a bill that would prohibit abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy nationwide, carving out exceptions for rape, incest and when the mother’s life is in danger.

The move has attracted criticism from some in his own party, who expressed a desire to leave abortion legislation to states after the Supreme Court voted to overturn Roe v. Wade in June.

The only type of national ban I could support is 3rd trimester. Prior to that it is up to the states.
Now, I could enthusiastically support a law that codifies killing the human fetus within x days of birth to be murder. Pick your X. Everyone involved: priest, doctor, nurse, anesthsiologist (sp?), admin who checked her in for the procedure, guy who cleaned up the room afterwards, EVERYONE. You are all charged with 1st degree under Fed law.

Never has Linda been a player in the anti-abortion movement. Until now. Until Row v. Wade was struck down. Suddenly he find "religion", just when the Dems need Linda's divisive rhetoric most. Just in time to queer Republican chances in the mid-terms. Despicable.

It's time to primary Linda. We need a strong MAGA candidate to take him down in the primary. Sad to say, we have to wait four years until 2026.

What he actually said:

I am confident the American people would accept a national ban on abortion at 15 weeks

Those very much are not the same thing.

He’s pro-life because he knows he can’t get young boys pregnant.

You are right. A national abortion ban could turn into a national law on any other personal health procedure in one legislative session. Like a national requirement to take all CDC recommended vaccines.

The Federal Government has no business regulating abortions or other medical procedures. That is the job of the states.

The Supreme Court did the right thing by leaving the issue of how to regulate abortions to the voters in each state.

Lindsey Graham is just trying to drive liberal Democrat turn out in the upcoming election so that he won't get washed out to sea in a Red Tsunami.

Why can’t the fed govt just let the states make their decisions?. (While, morally m ok with the 15 week cap). I’m not ok with the Fed govt inserting power where it just has no constitutional authority to do so.

“Saboteur”

Exactly. The democrats are totally uninspired to vote this election.

He has to put some fire under them.

You can bet the FBI has dirt on Graham. He’ll do what they tell him to do. If they tell him to go out and push the abortion issue as a federal issue to inflame voters, he’ll do it.

He’s not just scum, he’s compromised scum.

Graham is a subversive.

He would not even get a GOP majority in the Senate.

As much as there is likely a GOP majority in the Senate that does not support abortion generally, I think it is even more likely to be a GOP majority in the Senate that believes in now keeping abortion an issue for each state without any federal intrusion - pro or con.

This is a State issue. Nothing in the constitution gives the Feds power to legislate in this area. And remember, if the Feds can ban it they can also legalize it…without restriction.

Graham is desperate to get out the post birth abortion vote to help him fight off MAGAA.
(Make America Great Again, Again!)

I like him even less than I like Schiff, or his other partners McConnell, Schumer
and Pelosi.

I will admit that I like him more than I like Fauci, though... 🐸

Graham is a regular on various Fox shows, and I was pleasantly surpised a few days ago when Fox host Jesse Watters pretty much called Graham an idiot, for what he was actually trying to do with this issue at this particular time.   (I posted this link on another thread, but I thought it might be a good idea to post it again here too, for any who might have missed that show.)

Those very much are not the same thing.

Politically speaking they are the same thing. Whatever the federal law says it will preempt state laws. As soon as the law is created it would become a perpetual federal wedge issue for the liberal Democrats. They'll fund raise on it, they will fight it, and they will win elections based on it.

And then they will amend the law to say 30 weeks, and then 36 weeks. And we will all be stuck with that law forever.

The Supreme Court did us all a big favor by returning the regulation of a medical procedure to the states, where it belongs.

Graham brought up the issue to damage the chances of Republicans in November, and to give the Democrat party back the national issue they lost when the court overturned Roe v. Wade.

Support for early abortion is very different than for late term. Confusing one with the other is intentional.

I think he’s right. Killing babies in the womb denies “Life” “Liberty” and “The Pursuit of Happiness”. We’ve already begun the swing of the pendulum.

If the Federal Gov allows abortions up to 15 weeks won't that prevent states from choosing to have more restrictive laws and basically codify Roe v Wade? Also it will make it easier for the evil ones to change it to 16 weeks or 20 weeks or 30 weeks incrementally?

No way Linda!

Sabotage yes, I’m beginning to see that’s accurate. There’s no reasonable explanation for Graham to be pushing this now other than give effing democrats a wedge issue to freak on.
