WASHINGTON (Reuters)—The U.S. government this week bought $290 million in supplies of a drug designed to treat blood cell injuries following radiological and nuclear emergencies as part of what it said were long-standing efforts to prepare for potential health impacts from threats to national security.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services purchased the drug Nplate from Amgen Inc.
When asked whether the purchase, announced Tuesday, was linked to tensions with Russia following its invasion of Ukraine, an HHS spokesperson said it was part of ongoing efforts to prepare for a wide range of threats including chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and emerging infectious diseases.
With funds from the Project Bioshield Act, a law passed in 2004, HHS supports the development of diagnostics, vaccines, and treatments to respond to potential health impacts of such threats. When development is successful, HHS buys the products for national preparedness.

If Radiation effects platelets, It would equally effect RBC and WBC. Meaning severe anemia and infections are possible. But, I suppose that’s better than bleeding to death.
During my AML leukemia, my platelets reached 1 (one). Normal is between 140-450). My gums bled around 25. At 15 when an IV was removed, I’d keep bleeding. Transfusions are given at 11. At 6 they want you to stay in bed till a transfusion is given. But, even after remission, my platelets sat around 75 for a year or so without it being a problem.
Being on the battlefront tho, there’s more cause for alarm and one can’t be a functioning soldier in any capacity with low platelets.

It is expected that Ukraine will spend the next few days restoring electricity supply to railways. The less the Ukrainian air defense radar works, the more difficult it was for Russian troops to detect it.
But on October 10, the Russian troops did something completely different. First, the strike was a massive one, dozens of rockets were used simultaneously. Secondly, these dozens of missiles of different types flew from different directions at different times – in order to approach the target simultaneously from different directions.
In such conditions, the air defense system is overloaded. Even if the missile launches are visible in advance, their simultaneous arrival at the target from different directions makes the air defense powerless to resist.
Finally, the missiles were launched in at least three, and maybe even four waves – in order to destroy targets that, for one reason or another, were not hit the first time.
The sheer number of these launches suggests that Russia has been able to significantly increase the number of carriers and platforms from which these missiles can be launched. This includes the number of appropriately trained long-range bomber crews.
