If you are stupid enough to major in Sociology, you are far too stupid to pass Computer Science.

Three years after getting her education degree, my cousin’s daughter is done with being a teacher. She regrets getting that degree now. As for me, I wish I’d gotten a degree in archeology or geology instead of accounting.

As a J-school graduate, I took a low-paying job in radio then switched to the phone company after the Carter Recession. This was 1979. I did customer service work for a decade then transitioned to cable and an overnight IT job. That lasted 12 years so when I was laid off in 2011, I found I was a square peg in a world of round holes. I had been taught “legacy” systems (computergeek word for “old”).

During the 2010s, I lost my job five times but never for cause. I just happened to be in the work group that could be sacrificed.

Finally, I retired in 2019 and now live in Panama, enjoying 70% of an American lifestyle for 70% of the cost.

BY the way, when I was in college, we laughed at the English and Psych majors, with Drama majors a close third. We’d ask “what kind of career can you get with that degree?” Amazing how few had even thought about it.

ROFL. Succinct and true.

That sounds like something “Silent Cal” might have actually said!

In my many years experience as a person that has sought and hired people for many positions, both technical and services oriented, veterans are the best. Degree holders whether experienced or not are nearly (but not always) inferior to vets as employees.

Since journalism was neither an art or a science, we had our own degree. The rest of the campus was working towards a BA or a BS degree. We journalism majors were working towards a BJ degree.

My political science degree never prevented me from getting a job in the IT field. When I first enrolled at University of Chicago, the school didn’t even HAVE a “Computer Sciences” degree. The programming courses were under MATH. The REAL propeller heads were math majors.

At the time, there was a philosophical understanding that “Computer Science” was not an academic discipline in the same way that Math, Physics, Chemistry and Biology are, as those are based on preexisting reality and not on artificial constructs. Having a degree in Computer Science at the time would be like offering a degree in “Electrical Engineering”, closer to a trade degree.

Women/black/gay studies, probably the most useless major in any college.

Those folks wind up as working bees in government bureaucracies and schools to dictate to the rest of academia, government and business how it shall operate.

When I was getting my comp sci degree in the late 90s, we would chuckle at the social work, music, art, and history majors. 20 years ago we knew their degrees were worthless. The social work majors were told in their freshman year they would have to pursue a masters if they hoped for a job and even then the pay would be lousy. But they still persisted.

Even logic uses maths...

One time I saw a photograph of the formula for figuring out how many days are lost due to alcoholism in the American Workforce. It was an extensive equation.

Maybe all those Fine Arts degrees can be put to good use decorating skateboard parks...

Not true.

I majored in English with a double minor in Education and Political Science.

I have quantifiably grown every business I have ever worked for.

I started as an assistant at an engineering firm. My boss and I had 6 months to turn that branch around or they were going to close it. A year and a half later, we were first nationwide in net profit. I consistently ranked first or second across the country in client satisfaction surveys. My reports, very infrequently challenged, always prevailed in court.

As Executive Director, I took one organization from only 200 members and nothing in reserves to 500 members, several hundred thousand in reserves and 14 national awards. When I left, they needed to hire an entire management company to replace me.

I left there and became operations manager for a multi-line property management company, then promoted to VP over one division. In 4 years, I doubled the client base of that division, taking it from the least profitable to the most profitable.

I moved to a high rise as a direct hire. Completely turned it around, got everything permitted and compliant, the books in order, created an emergency response manual, human resources manual, oversaw a million in infrastructure projects, and more. My building sustained less than $5K in damages during the 2021 storm because of my heavy focus on preparedness, maintenance, and testing. Doubled their reserve account through cost controls. For the second time in my career, when I left that had to hire an entire management company to replace me.

Went from there to a mid-sized company as Development Director. Quickly identified training deficiencies, provided them with a 26 week training program I built, gave them ideas to improve operations, and brought in half a million in new business. I’ve already secured 4 contracts for next year. I’ve been with them 6 months.

I regularly hear from the President of our parent company thanking me for my work.

I average $150K a year in earnings, on par with engineers and computer science peers.

I have found that what distinguishes people is not their degree, it is their commitment to excellence, work ethic, ability to learn, ability to communicate, and wanting to be the best.

Further, honor and ethics matter.

More than anything else, these qualities are sorely lacking in today’s world and that is why graduates with non-stem degrees are such lousy pickings.

Plumber and HVAC are also some of the most unpleasant jobs, crawling under houses and into attics.

Back in the good old days when I was working in the computer industry, the smartest IT guy I knew, he was truly a genius, had a Masters degree in American History.

Computer Science sounds good until you actually start doing the work. That’s when people get weeded out.

My accounting degree has paid the bills and put clothes on my 3 kids' backs. Now that I'm 68, I sometimes envision a do-over, in the form of a degree in viticulture. As great as that sounds, wine makers work their butts off.

For example, I lived in a town along the Mosel River during my tour in Germany. Over 2/3 of the grapes grown there grow on slopes greater than 60 degrees: nearly everything has to be done by hand because of that.

My degree came in handy in the Army, too. My last 18 months in Germany, I was the Battalion Supply Officer (S-4). Word travelled fast that I had the degree, that my knowledge of financial management, budgeting, and related disciplines far exceeded theirs. IOW, higher hq rarely messed with us.

The longest job I lasted at was about 4 years. Usually it was a case of management wanting to "move in a different direction", and we all know what that means. I even was a casualty of a "reorganization" after being at a small company in a bookkeeping role for 13 months. After upgrading to QuickBooks Online, the owners decided my job could be done cheaper by a less expensive bookkeeper.

My plans to kick back and draw unemployment until December were brought to a crashing halt during the middle of September. I interviewed for a newly created Tax Accountant position at a large real estate company. I was the 15th person interviewed for the position, over a 4 month period. LOL, the HR director calls me "the Unicorn", they had such difficulty filling the job.

It's been great so far, a fantastic, non-woke atmosphere, complete with Christmas parties, and Secret Santas. None of this "holiday party" nonsense. It's been a revelation: most of the officers live outside of Dallas, my two bosses reside in Florida, making it to the office on alternating weeks.

The company uses QuickBooks for its accounting, but it's QB Desktop. When the CEO polled us about a potential move to QB Online, the vote was unanimously AGAINST it.

Great place for my "last rodeo".

I am going to call BS on this //// education? Communists, trans and race baiters love this state sanctioned field. They love this crap.

Education is the most important field for nitwit blacks (sorry but true) Especially for dumb black women.
