I-84 in Hartford has a single-lane HOV. Invariably there’s a 3-passenger car doing precisely the speed limit, which makes it slower than the other lanes.
The fine should be doubled if the car is a Prius. Those drivers seem to think they can drive in any lane at any speed because “they are saving the planet.”Even worse are bicyclists. I just bitched about them yesterday at my dentist's office, which is in DC, after dealing w/ a traffic pile up due to restricted auto lanes for bike lanes. The front desk attendants were shy about it, but when I asked them to be honest, tell me how they feel about the bike lanes, they all admitted it sucks and the bicylists are a pain in the ass. When the dentist came to see me, she ranted about how bicylists think they own the planet.
I don’t agree with this. If traffic is heavy you aren’t going anywhere fast anyway, so just settle down. If traffic is light you can get around the slowpoke on the right. This only becomes really dangerous if the delta between the slowpoke and general traffic is extreme.
Now what SHOULD be penalized by instant death sentence, no appeal, is the 10% of dumb butts that do not turn lights on in heavy fog. Almost got hit by one the other day. This is far more dangerous that slow poking in the left lane.
I learned to drive in San Francisco. I think most drivers view it much the same way.
Me definition of ‘tailgating’ is : If they slam on their brakes as hard as possible, completely without warning, would you hit them. If the answer is ‘yes’ you’re following too damned close.
Drove a lot in Montana. Nearly always a non-zero chance of a deer appearing from nowhere. Same thing in a city, little kids dashing from between cars.
Nowadays I use a dashcam front and rear.
I would not be vexed. I would move to the right lane, pass the person and continue on my way. I would wonder why he was doing what he was doing, but after I passed him, I would give it no more thought.
