Corporate suicide watch: Harley-Davidson plans to go all-electric
American Thinker ^ | 22 Jan, 2023 | Thomas Lifson

I can’t think of a worse example of a corporate CEO misreading his customer base than this via the Robb Report (Hat tip: Ed Driscoll, Instapundit)

“At some point in time, Harley Davidson will be all-electric,” the executive [Harley-Davidson CEO Jochen Zeitz] recently told Dezeen. “But that’s a long-term transition that needs to happen. It’s not something you do overnight.”

Zeitz’s pronouncement seems guaranteed to make a not-insignificant portion of the manufacturer’s customer base cringe. For many enthusiasts, the thing that really sets a Harley apart from other motorcycles—American-made or otherwise—is a thunderously loud internal combustion engine. But the company knows that no matter how important those large-displacement mills might be change is on the horizon.

Maybe by “long term” he means several generations from now. If not, this is a surefire recipe for disaster.

With a battery much bigger than the electric motor, the look won't be nearly as appealing

Perhaps it is just an attempt to pre-empt critics, possibly including the CEO’s college indoctrinated children, claiming that Harley emissions are making “the oceans boil” as Al Gore recently claimed at Davos, after deplaning from his Gulfstream private jet, the Flying Squirrel.

But after all, what does Harley-Davidson really have to offer aside from a bad boy image connected to loud exhaust pipes...

“Not a challenge, and you can’t win when what I said is 100% true. BOWs!!! ;)”

You said to name an EV that could beat. I did. You did not contest my win.

“Thinking of all the time waiting for the battery to recharge.”

I would be sleeping and waking up to a fresh battery.

Ok there Rip Van Whinkle.

Some of us need to go to work more than one day a week.

“Some of us need to go to work more than one day a week.”

How many miles do you drive in a day?

“Some of us need to go to work more than one day a week.”

Wouldn’t it be nice to begin each day with a full “tank”?

You said to name an EV that could beat. I did. You did not contest my win.

You still DID NOT WIN.

An EV that can do what a 500 mile range ICE car, still does not exist. I can drive a 500 mile range SUV between Tampa and NYC, and only have to gas up once, maybe twice while on the road. I fill it up at home and then drive 500 miles and then gas up for another 500 miles, equaling 1000 miles range, which is close to NYC, and then perhaps get $10 worth of gas to complete the trip. And I can do that while driving perhaps 20-21 hours. Let's see you do that on your BOW, and only stop once for 5 minutes to 'fuel up'. Can't be done on your BOW and much less on an EV SUV.

Practicality and no stupidity. Your BOW is not what can compare to a regular ICE vehicle.

” can drive a 500 mile range SUV between Tampa and NYC, and only have to gas up once, maybe twice while on the road.”

You earlier said 3 refills.

Do you make pit stops? Meal breaks? Sleep?

Do you really make these trips or is this just a hypothetical.

” I fill it up at home “

No, you fill up at a gas station.

“And I can do that while driving perhaps 20-21 hours. “

Not very practical AND very unsafe.

But you know all that as you have circled back toman old conversation.

You earlier said 3 refills.

Three 'refills' includes my at home refill, where my home refill means a local gas station. I live 2 miles from a gas station, so it might as well be 'at home'.

After my at home 'refill' (btw, I refill every time I go to a gas station), I only have to refill the tank once more and then get perhaps $10 more gas to complete the trip.

And, yes, I have made that trip between Tampa and NYC 3 times, and I have had to make 'pit stops', but the driving was for a total of 20-21 hours. My gas stops didn't actually take more than 10 minutes and one of them actually took 5 minutes to fill up the tank.

Now, how long would you take to 'refill' your 'tank' with your designated EV (same as BOW)?

BTW, what's 'toman old conversation'? Is that Martian, or EVian? ;)

Some of my furthest away clients are a 137 mile trip one-way. In fact, driving my Dodge Ram down there day after tomorrow.

I’m in IT and my clients are all over this half of the State.

With brown outs and black outs... the only way an EV could do that... assuming it will even hold a charge as cold as it gets here, would be if I had my very own nuclear micro-reactor.

Even then, it isn’t like I could take it with me to recharge if I get stuck in traffic during a blizzard.

Most people have no need and no desire to put their lives at risk to save a few hours.

My truck can go 410 miles between fill ups, refills in about 4 minutes to go another 410 miles... At which point it could be refilled in about 4 minutes... You get the idea.

And it can do that even if it’s -20F...

Even if I’m towing my boat or my camper... Although... the mileage does take a hit and I’m lucky to get 300 miles towing.

No waiting “over night” just to complete the next leg of the journey...

And none of this has a damn thing to do with HD’s CEO’s idiotic greenie BS destroying an iconic machine.

You are the only one cheerleading for EV’s in this thread. Despite all of the very real problems with current EV technology that you studiously ignore.

As I recall, you started the with a stupid comment to me indicating you had no regard for the facts.

“(btw, I refill every time I go to a gas station),”

Think about that

Nothing to think about.

I refill my tank every time I go to a gas station. I may have a few miles left when I go to refill, but, I do ALWAYS fill it to the max every time. (Always and every time is repetitive, but, it's just for effect and for reiteration.)

Would you like further explanation?
