Why 65 Percent of Fourth Graders Can't Really Read
PJMedia ^ | FEBRUARY 12, 2023 | RICK MORAN

230,000 children who failed to show up for class when public schools reopened after the pandemic. It’s a tragedy without parallel in American history as many of the no-shows are very young — K through 3rd grade. Critical skills learned in early education were not taught to these kids, who are now hopelessly behind.

...

Consider the fact that 65% of American fourth-grade students can barely read. This is a result of a radical shift to a new way of teaching children how to read.

What was wrong with the old way? Well, it was old.

...

What exactly are these teachers doing to children?

...

After a couple of decades of teaching reading this way with abysmal results, you’d think even a leftist would throw in the towel and go back to what worked before. Not on your life. That would mean the critics who have been railing against this travesty of education were right. And, as we know, leftists would rather blow up the country than admit anything they do causes more harm than good.

You are unfortunately correct. Many decades ago, I remember my Kindergarten teacher getting upset because I was learning fractions. It wasn’t in her lesson plan.

Public schools are child abuse.
***********
It’s not all the schools fault. Reading takes practice and a desire to read. In saner times, kids read books at home. There was little TV, no video games, and no internet to compete with reading.

I can’t see how anyone would believe that teaching a child to read by asking them to “think of the word that fits best or look at the picture” would ever work. Teaching reading in that manner would mean that when a child encounters a new word, and there is no accompanying picture, they have no way to determine the sound of the word.

Thankfully, my grandchildren are home-schooled and have never had to put up with such foolishness. Between sight reading and common core math we have raised a generation of idiots!

In 1950, the US population was around 150 million people, 89% white.

In 2023, the US population is close to 340 million people, 61% white.

Extrapolate…

I was reading newspapers in the third grade, but just the sports section. It took me a year to figure out why the sportswriters referred to the Red Sox as “the Hose”.

I’m old. I got into trouble for reading in class in the 4th grade. Our teacher, Mrs. Avery, had warned me several times over the past couple of weeks to stop reading. I was reading a book about Sitting Bull and she had enough. The one male teacher in our elementary school always paddled the male students, but he was busy and I escaped unscathed.

On a side note I also had Mrs. Avery in the 2nd grade. She was of Irish descent and hated the British with a white hot passion. She had the class singing lyrics from ‘The Wearing of The Green’ (’they’re hanging men and women now for the wearing of the Green’).

Good times. I learned as much from reading on my own as I did in class, and I hated the British, at least for a year or two.

I liked watching programs like Captain Kangaroo and The Electric Company that focused a good deal on reading and vocabulary. By the time I was in fourth grade (1979), I read books about the history of hockey and followed the sports pages that good deal.

Even in our upper-middle class school district, which votes (R) and is pretty conservative - I have watched our school district decline badly over the last 15 years.

Costs are out of control, union has a stranglehold on administration, administrators are lazy, virtue-signalling karens. Always take the easy way out or use the cheap slogan. They have eliminated several advanced classes. They have constant debates about accomodating LGBT, etc...

The young, suburban (and white) soccer moms are mostly woke-brainwashed, and they are supporting this.

If parents can’t teach k - 4 reading why is anyone blaming teachers?

Parents are the primary educators for their children. Everyone can either consider themselves homeschoolers with a supplement of public school or they can explain to God later why this neglect happened.

Not suckers, just parents who aren't stupid. It doesn't matter what school you send a kid to, unless the parents (read mother) is involved and monitoring what the kid does it will be some sort of failure.
It's very rare for a kid to excel without a parent doing the background work.

“What exactly are these teachers doing to children”?

They are indoctrinating them that America is a bad Nation. Indoctrinating them to the ways America is a bad Country. Instructing them in the ways they can pleasure themselves.
Instructing them how to hate their parents. And how to do other things inspired by Satan. Teaching them how to get in touch with their inner selves.Informing them how to hate America. Teaching White Students why they should hate themselves because they are White.

What did you think they were doing? Teaching the three Rs? Teaching them how to be good productive productive Citizens?

No use doing it twice. If the parent has to do it anyhow, why send them to school? Smart, but not too bright, I’d say.

In fact, you wonder about those parents doing the extra, if they haven’t figured it out. These “public” systems got the whole game rigged this way. The 3 Rs are left to the parents while the children are catechized with the latest programming.

Poor suckers.

“No use doing it twice.”

Doing it twice is absolutely a good idea, practice makes perfect.

BUT THEN-—WE had parents who could read/write/speak English/ do math Not so sure many ‘parents’ in the USA can do that any more

Truth. We've devolved into a basically illiterate, innumerate society. It began in the 1960s and has only grown worse.
